12 days, 1800 miles in your MG.
From...Donald Wilson
March 15, four MGB’s departed the Clare Valley – all members of the MG Car Club S.A: Tony Collins, Glenn and Shirley Waldhuter, Tony and Evelyn Dann, Donald and Sally Willson - and met up with a fifth MGB, also MG Club member, John and Gill Menz at Tailem Bend.
The full contingent of four red and one blue MGB’s with nine people, proceeded to Kingston the first nights destination.
The trip was planned to travel three and half to four hours, covering 100 to 380 kms per day. The route was designed to enjoy the scenic drive of the Great Ocean Road, at the same time experiencing the enjoyment of the ups and downs, the twists and turns and the challenges of the 40 year old vehicles.
The daily runs were terminated at Portland, Port Campbell (two nights and a topless day), Portarlington and Hastings, Mornington Peninsula (three nights and again topless).
The return trip had stopovers at Apollo Bay, Port Fairy and Robe. Apart from the nights at Port Campbell’s Daisyhill Country Cottages and Lake’s Edge cottage at Robe, the cabin accommodation at the local caravan parks proved to be very economical, comfortable and good fun.
The change of ‘tour leader’ each day, saw unplanned antics requiring 180 degree turns, circumnavigating roundabouts and occasional extra kilometres proved great conversation pieces during the ‘pre-dinner’ happy hours.
All cars were given a shine prior to departure each morning ensuring they performed to expectation. The cost of ongoing maintenance on the trip consisted of a replacement battery, a fuse replacement and the loss of a windscreen wiper.
The art of packing the vehicles was perfected by the end of the trip with John Menz being commended for managing to include a carton of wine amongst Gills possessions.
A great trip, great people driving great cars – where next?
