GIVE
YOUR MGF A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

IMPROVE YOUR MGF=
- FIT A
COLD AIR INTAKE SYSTEM
There
are several ways to fit a cold air intake to an MGF, after some deliberatio=
n I
decided to retain the standard air box and fit a K&N panel filter and r=
un a
new 80mm 3” bore intake hose from the left hand side air intake duct
directly to the air-box. Do it yourself parts cost around a $100.
PART
1
Cold
Air Modification
It is
assumed you have removed the main engine bay access panel and rear engine
grille. Firstly remove the rubber hose at the throttle body and air-box, t=
hen
unclip and remove the air-box lid and remove the standard paper filter. Next
unbolt the air-box at 2 fixing points and remove along with the anti vibrat=
ion
hose. Below the air-filter box is the resonator box (MGF only), this is not
needed even when you put the standard air-box back on, but unfortunately th=
is
cannot be taken out unless you drop the rear sub-frame. Read-on=
.
To
remove the resonator you have to unbolt the metal bracket that mounts the f=
uel
filter and unclip the 3 cables. With the rear end jacked up and LH rear whe=
el
removed,
Ref. fig 2. you will see the 2 bolts that secure the resonator to =
the
wheel well, before the removal of the resonator and old air induction pipe
(black shaded area Fig 1)
mark
the resonator before cutting to the outline of the metal wheel well,=
=
span>if you =
want
to re-shape it and put it back as a splash panel, with the resonator gone y=
ou
have a lot more space to work in from the left hand air intake up to the
throttle body.
* Best bet =
is to
cut it longitudinally and remove it in two half’s, then jiggle it aro=
und
to remove.
To
connect the new intake hose to the filter box use 80mm/ 3” convolute =
air
hose or silicone hose (the latter can be more expensive but is the best) bo=
th
can be placed easily into the plastic left hand air intake shroud and can be
located their with some adjustment and seated with silicone, the other end =
goes
direct to the filter box intake connector that is removable from the resona=
tor box,
you will need this along with the small anti-vibration hose to re-connect t=
hem
to the air-box with jubilee hose clips, the one that secured the old air in=
take
hose is re-usable and you will need to purchase another one of the same size
and one larger one for the new 80mm/3” air hose.
Note: It is eas=
ier to
install if you pre-assemble them first, and then feed into place hose first
through engine bay and into the side air duct.
Dress
the new intake hose to shape and length and place into the left hand ducting
using the cut end of the 80mm/3” hose, (approximately 2 thirds of a
metre) I found this to be the cheaper option but it takes a little longer to
do.
The modification takes about a day a=
nd a
half to complete. The most difficult things are; gaining access to the engi=
ne
by unclipping the hood, removal of trim, access panel removal and cutting
through the resonator; * I used a hot soldering iron=
(but m=
ake sure
you leave enough material there as marked if you want to replace it as a sp=
lash
panel).

Part 2
K&N Panel filter
If you do decide to do the complete
installation and fit a High Air Flow Panel Filter to fur=
ther
improve engine horsepower and torque then you will find the following
information useful?
K&N panel filters are synonymous=
for
quality and performance and are considered as one of the best products
available and they come with a 100000 mile/160,000km warranty, it is
recommended that you clean and re-oil every 50,000mile/80,000km. Determining
the correct part numbers and cheapest supplier was difficult so the followi=
ng
information should help.
