MOTORKHANA
Monday 13 April
From...Wes Bray
The day began early, not quite as early as the previous day when I had to travel over 100 km to the hill climb. This time it was a one to two km drive to the motorkhana. I knew that it was early as I had to pull over to the side of the road due to the amount of sun glare on a dewy windscreen.
The motorkhana site was a bitumen car park at the Barwon Activity Centre. It was a small site and the courses barely fitted into the available space. It was obvious that drivers of cars without power steering or with large turning circles were going to be kept very busy.
The courses chosen by the organisers were Serpentine, Double Hat and Bowler. There was some confusion amongst the competitors as the Bowler test was not run according to the published course maps, a quick safety check of the cars, the officials briefing and the drivers briefing it was time for action. Drivers formed up in an orderly fashion in rough class order and moved from one course to the next using the path clearly defined by cones. Some competitors did not like the rapid transition from one test to the next as they did not have much time to do their homework. This was used as one of the excuses for the high number of wrong directions. Another possible reason for the number of wrong directions was the fact that the course maps were printed on the time cards making it impossible for last minute direction checks while sitting in the start garage.
After approximately three hours the morning group had completed their two runs on each course and it was time for the afternoon group to repeat the competition. The smooth running of the event reflected the careful pre-event planning of the Victorian and Geelong clubs.
As the following results summary shows the South Australian competitors had mixed success. I was happy with my efforts as my fastest times for Bowler and Double Hat were personal best times for these courses. I also had 6 clear rounds, something of a rare event amongst the Croweaters.
