“A MAD HATTER PARTY”

Long weekend Oct.3rd, 4th and 5th 2009
.

Rod Byrne

The ”Mad Hatters’ Party” Weekender extravaganza at Berri in the Riverland began at Auchendarroch on Saturday morning with 23 couples and their vehicles at the start to enjoy an early morning tea.

We left Auchendarroch around 10.ooam for our “first” meal stop. Lunch at Swan Reach Hotel over looking the River Murray, where we met up with Leon and Faye Rosenzweig. Having had lunch we travelled onto Berri via Loxton and booked into the Berri Resort Hotel/Motel.

Before moving on to our next venue for entertainment it was time for our “first” happy hour which was held in the car park at the Motel.

Mid afternoon we all moved off to Renmark where our vehicles were parked on the lawns on the river front as a static display. Members of the local car club looked after the vehicles while we played.

During this time we enjoyed a Steam driven Paddle boat ride on the PS Industry. This was the highlight of the weekend.  A one hour cruise up and down the river in perfect weather. Back on shore we enjoyed a free evening and most went to the Renmark Club for dinner.

Sunday morning was perfect weather and we enjoy a great “hot” breakfast in the Motel’s breakfast room before being picked up by the locals and taken out to Leon and Faye Rosenzweig’s property for a very early morning tea…. a typical county hospitality type morning tea.

Leon, Faye and friends took our group on a drive around the area finishing up in Barmera’s main street where there was a local market ensuing and where, our vehicles were lined up for a static display for approximately an hour.  Just long enough for our ladies to enjoy a rummage through the markets.

This adventure was followed by a “running board” luncheon on the banks of  Lake Bonney…...still in perfect weather. At this stage we had been  joined by nine people from Mildura and 12 people from the Riverland area.

Joining us from Mildura (Vic) were

Les and Elaine Burrell                                   Athol and Carol Fawdry

George Dolene,   Adam Zinich

Rod and Anne Gleason                                  Ian Kinleyside

and from The Riverland:

Leon and Faye Rosenzwieg                           Chris Weeks,   Geoff March

Beven and Jill Clifford

Joe and Coralie Heywood                            Roy and Liz Petiffer

Adam Petiffer and Emma Foreman

The group then headed back towards Berri …some stopped off in Monash play ground to walk down the food we had consumed, and to visit the Chocolate Factory.. some went back into Berri…some travelled onto Renmark for afternoon tea at Ruston Roses, however, we all got safely back for “Happy Hour” prior to the evenings “Mad Hatters’ Party”.

Once again “Happy Hour” was held in the car park…. plenty of room…plenty of good fellowship…and plenty of good laughs and good cheer.

From this point on, as we all began to appear with our decorative hats on, laughter was the order of the night and continued right through to the end of the evening.

The meal was well presented and sufficient to satisfy the “most” needy of us all.  We were joined by Leon and Faye Rosenzwieg and  Pettifer family (4)  for dinner at the Motel.

Prizes were given out again with much jeering and laughter.

Each attending person received a “specially struck” MG logo chocolate produced locally.

Bed saw most slumber soundly…some , however, played on as a couple of Birthdays were celebrated. We found out whom they were at breakfast the next morning by the colour of their eyes and the thumping of their heads and the false smiles.

Breakfast Monday morning was again, of course, hot and plentiful.

Farewell to all and we travelled back home at our own pace and time

Unfortunately Rodger & Sue Polkinghorne's lovely MGB suffered the indignity of having to come home on the back of a truck when they went through a pothole and the fan blade cut a hole in the bottom tank of the radiator.

The above photos sent to me by Rodger Polkinghorne, thanks Rodger!
