1500

The 1489 cc engine produced 68 hp (51 kW) at first, but was soon uprated to 72 hp (54 kW). Lockheed hydraulic drum brakes were used on all wheels. A coupé version was also produced, bringing the total production of standard MGAs to 58,750
An early open car was tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1955 had a top speed of 97.8 mph (157.4 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 16.0 seconds. A fuel consumption of 26.7 miles per imperial gallon (10.6 L/100 km; 22.2 mpg-US) was recorded. The test car cost £844 including taxes.

Twin-Cam
A high-performance Twin-Cam model was added for 1958. It used a high compression (9.9:1 later 8.3:1) DOHC aluminium cylinder head version of the B-Series engine producing 108 hp (81 kW; 109 PS) (100 bhp (75 kW; 101 PS) in the low compression version). Four wheel disc brakes by Dunlop were also fitted, along with Dunlop peg drive knock-off steel wheels akin to the wheels used on racing Jaguars (wire spoked wheels were never fitted to the Twin Cam).

The temperamental engine was notorious for warranty problems during the course of production, however, and sales were poor. Ironically, the source of the problem was only discovered after production had ended and many restored Twincam cars are running more reliably today than they ever did during production. The Twin-Cam was dropped in 1960 after 2,111 had been produced. The car can best be distinguished from the pushrod models by its centre lock steel road wheels.
An open car was tested by the British The Motor magazine in 1958 and was found to have a top speed of 113 mph (182 km/h), acceleration from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.1 seconds and a fuel consumption of 27.6 miles per imperial gallon (10.2 L/100 km; 23.0 mpg-US) was recorded. The test car cost £1283 including taxes of £428.

1600 Mark II and Mark II De-Luxe
The engine size was increased again to 1622 cc by increasing the bore from 75.4 mm (3.0 in) to 76.2 mm (3.0 in) for the 1961 Mark II MGA. It also had a higher ratio 4:1 rear axle which made for more relaxed high speed driving. An inset grille and Morris Mini tail lamps appearing horizontally below the deck lid were the most obvious visual changes. 8198 Mark II roadsters and 521 coupés were built

As with the 1600 De Luxe, there were also some Mark II De Luxe versions with 290 roadsters and 23 coupés made.

There are a lot of "project " photographs in the Register file, if they have been completed please send the latest photograph.

MGA 1600 Mk1

We bought the car from Rainsfords in September 2008. It has a Mk II MGB motor but otherwise stock Mark I 1600.
Since purchasing the car we have been improving the mechanicals while thoroughly enjoying the car and the club.

Engine No.:         N6933252P
Chassis No.:        999201351 (?)

Owners: Murray & Karen Stephenson

This vehicle is a MGA coupé, (fixed head) varying from the roadster (drop head), being one of 773 coupés built in 1958 as export model.  MGA coupés vary from the roadster in a couple of areas such as fixed head (roof) and wind-up windows and lockable doors. Built in 1958 this car was delivered to North America, in left-hand drive form.

This particular car was brought to Australia in the early 1990’s by Bob Bazzica and sold to Dr. William McLarty in Whyalla where full restoration was undertaken in 1995 for his wife’s 50th birthday present (very nice little gift!) and set up as a reliable touring car for her.

The restoration included converting to R/H drive, full body off and zinc coated panels before painting in two pack, chassis powder coated, new leather interior, new carpets throughout. Other features in the restoration were, wire wheels blasted and finished in two pack silver, revamped suspension including larger anti roll bar, new electric’s, rebuilt gearbox and new 3.8 ratio diff. The original 1500 engine (in storage) replaced with a balanced, ported and polished MGB Mk11 1800

The other non standard feature added to this car is air conditioning hence the installation of a more powerful motor, this makes for very pleasant touring on hot days, while still returning 35 + mpg fuel consumption.

Purchased April 2003 by the present owner

1960 MGA Mk1

Peter Roberts purchased his 1960 MGA in 1971 from Bill Richards Motors of Broadview. It has the original motor but has had the differencial replaced, gearbox rebuilt and the roof re-upholstered. This photo was taken on Pride of Ownership (POO) day at the Torrens Parade grounds Adelaide.

1960 MGA 1600

We purchased our 1960 MGA 1600 roadster in November 2005. We completed our own restoration including new trim, upholstery and a bare metal respray, to the original colours, in April 2006.
Engine no.16GAU19784,
Chassis no. GHNL89177,
Colour Old English White with black trim.
We believe that the car came from the USA in the mid 60's and was converted to RHD.

1960 MGA Mk1 1600       VSM-135

The owners of this vehicle are Barry & Nancy Softley of Lockleys, who purchased this vehicle in April 2005.

The chassis number is 887095771 and Engine Number S95327P.

I have no details as to its early history but do know that it was professionally restored by Sportscar Connection in December 1994 and was the major price in a raffle organised by one of our major private schools.
It is a very fine example of this model MGA.

Here's a photo of my MGA. I purchased the car from MG Spares and Service in 2002. The Bazzicas did some work on it to bring it up and basically it has been faultlessly reliable ever since. (Nice one Bob!)

I am a member of the club (no 917) but not very active just having been to a few functions. I basically just drive the MGA for pleasure when I'm home. Living in Chandlers the Hills are literally on my doorstep.

1959 MGA Twin Cam
Engine No. 1043
Chassis No. YD31736
Registration No. MGA-TC

Car originally  delivered to California U.S.A. Date of despatch from
the factory 2nd April 1959. Imported to Australia early 1991
Sort of restored between late 1999 and 2002. We purchased the car from Victoria In February 2006. Mechanical restoration was excellent the rest left a lot to be desired. We have spent the past 18 mths. fixing the rest,  i.e. Chrome Plating, New Leather Upholstery, Fixing Paint Work and generally bringing the car up to concours condition.

Owners: Allan & Raelene  Semmler.

1959 MGA Twin Cam

Original Engine No. 16GBU 2111
Chassis No. YD2 2448

Currently fitted with 2 litre MGB motor and factory C.R.gearbox.

I have most of the Twin Cam motor for when I fully restore the car. Original Victorian car bought out in 1960 for competition by Alan Mann of Bathurst fame. The car appears to be in very good overall condition probably because it was used in competition by a few of the previous owners.

Owner: Don Walker
