The MGB was a sports car launched by MG Cars in May 1962 to replace the MGA and manufactured until 22 October 1980 — originally by the British Motor Corporation and later by its successors. MGB production continued throughout restructuring of the British motor industry, and the parent company’s transition from BMC to British Motor Holdings (in 1966) and to British Leyland Motor Corporation (in 1968).
Originally introduced as a convertible ("roadster"), a coupé (the hatchbacked "GT", almost a shooting brake) version, with 2+2 seating, was introduced in 1965. The MGB featured a four-cylinder petrol engine. A derivative model, called the "MGC" featured a six-cylinder engine and a later variant, called the "MGB GT V8" fitted with the ex-Buick Rover V8 engine was made from 1973 to 1976. Combined production volume of MGB, MGC and MGB GT V8 models was 523,836 cars. A very limited-production "revival" model with only 2,000 units made, called "RV8" was produced by Rover in the 1990s. Despite the similarity in appearance to the roadster, the RV8 had less than 5% parts interchangeability with the original car.

The MGB was a relatively modern design at the time of its introduction. It utilized a monocoque structure that reduced both weight and manufacturing costs as well as adding chassis strength. This was a considerable improvement in comparison to that of the traditional body-on-frame construction used on the earlier MGA and T-type models as well as the MGB's rival, the Triumph TR series. The design included wind-up windows and a comfortable driver's compartment, with plenty of legroom and a parcel shelf behind the seats

.

The MGB's performance was brisk for the period, with a 0–60 mph (96 km/h) time of just over 11 seconds, aided by the relatively light weight of the car. Handling was one of the MGB's strong points. The 3-bearing 1798 cc B-Series engine produced 95 hp (71 kW) at 5400 rpm. The engine was upgraded in October 1964 to a five-bearing crankshaft in an effort to improve reliability. A majority of MGBs were exported to United States. In 1974, as US air pollution emission standards became more rigorous, US-market MGBs were de-tuned for compliance. As well as a marked reduction in performance, the MGB gained an inch in ride height and the distinctive rubber bumpers which came to replace the chrome for all markets.
The MGB was one of the first cars to feature controlled crumple zones designed to protect the driver and passenger in a 30 mph (48 km/h) impact with an immovable barrier (200 ton)

1977 MGBGT
Exterior: Tahiti Blue Interior: Grey
Owner: Chris Hunt
First registered in UK to a British Army Colonel in 1977, who upon retirement imported it into Perth Australia in the 80's, where it resided until 2008, when I purchased it and shipped it to Adelaide.
The car has had a number of improvements performed by MG Sales & Service - Bob Bazzica.
Including lowering to chrome bumper height, fitting of Sebring front, rear valances and new (BGT V8) springs & sway bar, which has provided much improved handling. This coupled with a tuned, free revving 1800cc engine, electronic overdrive, 2" custom exhaust, air horns and 15" alloys, make "Paddington" a very enjoyable weekend toy.

Owners:
The MGB started life as an American rubber nose and has been converted from LHD to RHD, 3.5 ltr Rover V8, Toyota 5 speed gearbox with a Skyline LSD diff. It is a very nice touring car.

Private sale to Michael Sanders of Linden Park in early 1990 with around 11,000 miles registered on the odometer. Michael owned it for 8 years and carried out a great deal of work on the car including complete, bare metal restoration of the car along with improvements such as leather upholstery, cloth hood and tonneau cover, 1" lowering kit, chrome wire wheels, weber carby, slight cam, wooden steering wheel and an a second engine rebuild at 30,000miles.
Purchased by current owner in November 1998. An overdrive gearbox was fitted by the owner in June 2003. It's a very reliable car and raises many heads with it's quality red paint work, chrome spokes and great exhaust burble.

This is"B" short for Beatrice as christened by my family within days of purchase.  So she is female and typical of her sex - high maintenance and if I don't pay her proper attention she sulks and won’t start or there are FLOODS of tears.
Actually she is a 1971 Mk2 imported from the USA, first registered in Adelaide in 1993, and purchased by me as my Christmas present to me in December 1999.  She was converted to RHD and comprehensively restored by someone unkown but they did a good job.  I am not sure that any 34 year old car can be referred to as original but she is, as far as I know, original allowing a bit for the fact that she is not as young as she was and allowing for the right hand drive conversion.  She is now probably regarded as an 'older restoration' and I am gradually getting her back into really good condition as funds allow.Mileage is coming up 100,000 miles but whether that is the first, second or third time around I have no idea.  Nor do I know how many other previous lovers she has had but being the pretty lady that she is, I suspect it may be quite a few !  - Rick Smith

This car was recently at National Motor Museum, Birdwood.

I have owned it since 1982 & it was fairly sad when I found it.

Non original motor & gearbox to start with & over 4 years, most rust repair panels were replaced.
Has had at least 3 colours after the lovely Sky Blue it came to Australia with -  & is now Monza Red, of course.

This is car #1869 so in the scheme of things is probably one of the oldest MGB's in Australia - manufactured in 1963

I think this is a car that fortune smiled upon. It was built in the Leyland plant at Zetland in July 1972, just four months from the end of Australian production, and was first registered in Victoria (as LHY-503 ... I’d love to hear from the original owner!) in October 1972. I have no additional paperwork on the car until July 1987 when MG Workshops in East Bentleigh sold it to a gentleman in Wynyard Tasmania. It had travelled 39,000 miles at that time. It later had a second keeper in Tassie who evidently moved to Adelaide in 1994 and brought it with him. The extensive paper trail thereafter indicates that it has had a relatively easy life, good maintenance and four further owners before I acquired it in November 2003, very original and in very good nick.

“Today it lives a life of luxury, on historic reg, in a large shed, protected by a dust cover and exposed to wet weather as infrequently as possible! A lucky car!”

The MG has lived life in Adelaide, I purchased it in January 2010. The mechanics and body structure are very sound, with an upgraded gearbox (synchro'') along with upgrades on electrics, brakes and suspension. Chromed parts have replaced originals, with more being added from the exhaust tip to trim screws and cups. "Tinkering"  and TLC, will continue to maintain and improve the vehicle's appearance and reliability. Rego   FI-6709
