MG TD In 1949, a replacement for the TC was announced. It was not, as one might have expected, a car with a totally different, modern appearance, but yet another Midget in the familiar mould. The TD Midget, while it certainly had the appearance of a Midget, had much which was different under the skin. The TD had a completely new chassis, which had been developed from that used in the Y-Type saloon. In 1950 the TD MkII was introduced, produced alongside the standard car, with a more highly tuned engine with 8.0:1 compression ratio giving 57 bhp (43 kW) at 5500 rpm. It also featured twin fuel pumps revised dampers and a higher rear axle ratio. Nearly 30,000 TDs had been produced, including about 1700 Mk II models , when the series ended in 1953 with all but 1656 exported. 23,488 were exported to the United States.[2]

TD 1951 Purchased in 1972 by present owner and imported from NZ to Adelaide in1981. MGA wire wheels fitted in 1974. Car still has original block and gearbox.

1950 MG TD Owners: Chris & Mailny Hunt Purchased in 2009 from a fellow MG club member, and relocated to Glenelg as a stablemate for "Paddington" (see MGB gallery), after enjoying many years in Clare Valley. Renamed, due to its Chile Red colour, "Pepper" is extremely reliable, with a nice crisp exhaust note from the 1250cc XPAG engine and wonderful, natural patina, indicating a much loved, regularly exercised vehicle. Since acquiring the car we have enjoyed participating in this years All British Day display and numerous tours with the MGCCSA and the SCCSA Classic and Vintage sections, together and regular attendance at club meetings and nogin and natter nights at the club house. |
