**MARCH 25TH – SUPER SPRINT at MALLALA
Entry forms are not yet available on the MSCA Website, but when they appear, suggest members get in early to secure a place, as the first event of the year is always popular.
Shed 47 will be hired for the MGCC and provide free tea, coffee etc.
VOLUNTEERS: As the sprints throughout the year, participating clubs are rostered for one event to help out with Flag Marshalls, and the MG Car Club has been allocated this event – March 25th.
This is good timing as far as our club is concerned as the MGCC of SA is hosting the MG Club Challenge here in SA on the June Long weekend, with a Mallala Super Sprint on the Saturday, and Collingrove Hillclimb on the Sunday.
For this event, we will require many volunteers, and March 25th is a good opportunity to try out some Flag Marshalling and get a ‘birds eye view’ of the event. Inexperience people are partnered with people with experience.
Anyone who can help out, even for half a day, it would be greatly appreciated at either of these Sprint events.
**APRIL 22nd – MULTICLUB COLLINGROVE HILLCLIMB
MAY 6th – MSCA 6HR REGULARITY RELAY
If you would like to be part of a team, team manager, or team helper, please let either Murray or myself know, so that we can start planning ahead this year.
NEW RULING ON FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

(Including Super Sprints & Hillclimbs)
All extinguishers must be tested/replaced every three years, and the scrutineers at events are checking the dates on the extinguishers.

ROLL FRAMES for open cars for MSCA Super Sprints
At the recent MSCA meeting held Monday night, it appears that MSCA may be enforcing Roll Bars in open top cars for 2012 Super Sprints. Please read the sup regs when they become available to see if and/or what is required. I realize that this will possibly exclude a few of our members who are not prepared to make alterations to their cars.
For the MG Club Challenge in June, it is planned that Roll Frames will be recommended, but not mandatory.

SA Circuit Racing Championship
Round 4 Mallala
19-20 November 2011

The MG-F field was very small with Rodney Gibb withdrawing his entry with two broken cars, Rod O’Malley nursing several broken fingers, James Evans busy with work, wife and baby taking front row in his life at this time and Graham Stewart running in Historic Touring Cars.
Qualifying resulted in Cody Hill on Pole, Troy Dontas 2nd, Daniel Day 3rd, Adrian Akhurst 4th and Simon Van Leuven 5th.
Race 1 – Saturday
Hill and Dontas went into turn 1 side by side with Hill going into the lead entering turn 2 and despite some spirited driving by Dontas the lack of grip (old tyres) meant the gap widened to 1.5 seconds at the flag after 6 laps.
Daniel Day impressed in 3rd place with this being his first race meeting at Mallala. Akhurst and Van Leuven filling 4th and 5th respectively.
Race 2 – Sunday (6 laps)
Dontas had a ripper start and led into turn 1 but Hill dive bombed him into the northern hairpin and out braked Dontas for the lead which he maintained to the flag.
Day and Akhurst had a good dice over several laps with at one stage the side by side on the entry into the esses, even though Akhurst was on the inside line Day just drove around him on the outside and led into the final turn onto the start/finish straight and held on to 3rd place to the flag.
Race 3 – Sunday (8 laps)
Dontas led off the line but the change into second gear resulted in a box full of neutrals. Hill assumed the lead and wasn’t headed in the run to the flag. Dontas never gave up and closed the gap to Hill with only 1.5 seconds between them at the flag.
Day had a big spin coming out of turn 1 on the third lap but fought back from last to finish 3rd after dicing with Akhurst over several laps. Van Leuven again finished 5th.
Race 4 – Sunday (10 laps)
Dontas again won the start and held the lead for two laps until Hill squeezed past with Dontas hard on his heels for several laps. Around lap six Hill and Dontas came up on a back marker (Circuit Excel) at the southern hairpin Hill went to the outside and was baulked, Dontas went to the inside and was in the lead. What followed was an exceptional piece of sportsmanship by Troy as he slowed and allowed Cody to pass him for the lead.
The pace of the leading two was such that both sustained minor damage to front and rear bumpers during braking duels into the northern hairpin and into the esses for lap after lap. The final result being Hill 1st and Dontas 2nd with a gap of only 0.5 seconds at the flag.
The others all had somewhat of a lonely time running by themselves until Day pitted with a rear-wheel bearing problem that made the handling very iffy. Akhurst and Van Leuven bring up the rear.
Note. This report was provided by Rodney Gibb. MGFs race in their own class at Mallala and hopefully members might like to attend these meetings and see these cars in action, after all they are MGs..!!!
The race days can be accessed on page 44 and the SCCSA website, www.sportingcarclubsa.org.au
2011 Motorsport Review
2011 Motorsport Review
From..Bev Waters
Another year has passed quickly, and our Club motorsport activities have come to an end for 2011.
We have had another great group of people competing in Motorsport this year, with over forty different competitors taking part at a variety of events. With additional attendance of partners, Volunteers and other club spectators, it has swelled the club member attendance to motorsport events close to the one hundred mark for the year.
The use of Shed 47 at Mallala for our club members is much appreciated and creates an area for everyone to congregate and socialize between runs, not to mention some shelter from the elements what ever it may be.I would sincerely like to thank all the volunteers that have helped out at events during the year. Without your assistance, the events could not be run, and everyone taking part really appreciate your efforts. Thank you.
I would also like to express my gratitude to my Motor Sport Assistant Secretary, Murray Stephenson (his first year on the committee), and who has been an enormous help to me throughout the year. Laurie Houghton and Murray have also helped me out with reports for the Magazine and Monthly meetings when needed, and this too has been very much appreciated.
Thanks also to Ian Curwen-Walker & Tim Edmonds who has helped out with CAMS matters and reports. The 2012 Motorsport calendar has been drafted and is attached, there are also other events that don’t qualify for Championship points that may be of interest to members next year. There are 16 ** (2 star events) which qualify for Club Competition Championship points, the competitors best 10 results will count towards the Championship. Confirmation will also be sent out to my email list of members who wish to be kept updated with Club Motorsport activities. Anyone not on my list but would like to be, send me an email to tundarri@internode.on.net
The MG Club Challenge is back in South Australia next year on the June Long Weekend, and it has recently been confirmed that we have the use of the Mallala Circuit on Sat 9th June & Collingrove Hillclimb on Sunday 10th June. We can now start planning the event in earnest, and we will be looking for as many volunteers as possible for these events to help run them.
So get some rest, enjoy the Christmas Break, check your cars, & we will be back again for our first club event on Sunday February 26th for the Social MSCA picnic, display and presentation day, (Venue yet to be confirmed).
This will be followed by our first competition event ** Motorkhana on 11th March 2012 at Monato which our club will be organizing. It will also be a great event to practice your skills if intending to go to the MG National Meeting in Hobart at Easter.
Geraldine Hough has advised she now has a stock of the MG Motorsport “tops” 100% pure cotton pre shrunk long sleeves with MG Club logo and MG Motorsport on each sleeve at $30.00 each, contact Geraldine on Ph: 8251 4807 for purchases. Merry Christmas to all, and the best of Health & Happiness for the year ahead.
Cheers Bev
LEGEND OF THE LAKES
HILLCLIMB
4 -5 -6 Nov 2011
Mount Gambier
From..Laurie Houghton
For some time now I have wanted to have a run at the Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb in Mount Gambier but the Historic race meeting at Sandown is on the same weekend and that had been my preferred meeting however this year we went to Sandown for the MG Challenge in June and had stacks of track time so the opportunity to compete at the Legend beckoned.
Now it is not as easy as it looks to get a berth in this event, entries opened on Wednesday 13 July and within 24 hours the Sat/Sun field of 150 was full, there were people waiting at the Secretaries front door at 6.30pm on Wednesday evening with handfuls of entries, I posted mine on the Thursday night by express post and ended up in the reserves list.
The event is run over three days where Friday is restricted to Historic cars and Sat/Sun to all cars, as my MGBV8 is log booked as Marque Sports I got an entry for Friday only but took the gamble that there would be some withdrawals from the main days and that I would get in, so I booked a Motel room, I went from reserve #9 to #3 by the middle of October and within a week of leaving was offered the weekend entry.
Warren Litchfield came with me as a spectator and we took off Thursday am and got to the hill climb site in the middle of the afternoon and apart from not having been to Mount Gambier for many years I had never been to the Valley Lake where the hill climb takes place, and I have to say it is one of the most picturesque places I have been in a long time let alone to a hill climb site.
The council has supported this event from its inception and does a marvellous job in preparing the area, the event is run on the public road from the Caravan Park down to the Valley Lake area, it was closed off to the public from 8.00am each day and there were free buses to transport spectators up and down to the pit area throughout the whole event.
There were 46 entries for the Friday competition and this gave me plenty of time to get used to the 1.4km track, from the start line there a number of tight turns both up and down hill including a section through some Armco on both sides of the road followed by a long flat out high speed run up the main hill and through a chicane, called the bus stop just short of the last right hand turn to the finish line to slow you down before you hit a concrete barrier.
We caught up with Dave Anderson and Jane Vollebregt from the Melbourne club, Jane co-driving Dave’s super quick 1800 MGB, and Troy Ryan from our club driving the little Sprite, this Friday event is a bit lay back with plenty of time to have a look around and a chat with the other competitors.
Saturday and Sunday is something else, by Saturday morning the whole area was full of cars, all 148 of them ( 2 late withdrawals, so Jane who was originally only entered for Friday got a start for the Sat/Sun ) Troy’s partner Keirstie Bull drove their MGBGTV8 on both these days.
The weather on Friday and Saturday was just perfect, Sunday morning was a little overcast but came good by lunch time, the competition was extremely fierce, and the turbo and 4 wheel drive turbo cars were in their element, about half the field complete their run and assemble in a car park beyond the finish line and return to the pits via the main track and a bypass road allowing the remainder of the field to start.
Sundays event was cut short at the end of the third run, when I understand the communications people decided to leave ( I have to qualify this as heresay ) there is no doubt everybody was expecting the fourth run, I certainly was, nevertheless a brilliant meeting organised by the South Eastern Automobile Club who are to be congratulated for their efforts.
Warren is now champing at the bit for 2012 and I have to get a lower ratio diff, currently a Ford 3.23 LSD so need a 3.90 or a 4.11.

MSCA Super Sprint Rnd 5
23 October

L-R Roger Lange ( Triumph owner ) Warren Litchfield, Peter Goodale, Laurie Houghton, John Davies, Craig Houghton and Don Walker
This event was originally scheduled as a Driver Training Day however this was changed to more of a family day, two rounds of sprinting in the morning, parade laps after lunch and a driver/car swap followed
This change of format saw a reduced field as well as not being one of our Club Championship events.
It was quite hot and I don’t think times across the board were up to scratch, John Davies Turbo Mazda continues to impress, the silent assassin.
Warren Litchfield was back after a layoff with some eye surgery and was taking it easy as a consequence.
There were only 6 MGCC members competing and supporters Bev Waters, Craig Houghton, Peter and Judy Goodale and Joan Gates.
I was keen to give my car a final run before attending the Mt Gambier Hillclimb as I have been unhappy with the times I have been recording at the Collingrove hillclimbs and the last few sprints and as luck has it when the opportunity to have a driver/car swap came it allowed me to really appreciate why the performance was off.
For some time now Ron Gates has been promising me a drive of his racing car, well here it was, Ron ran me through the intricacies of the car, like how the power suddenly comes on when the Toyota engine comes on the cams and how the steering and handling reacts with slick tyres.
I can tell you it was quite an experience, it was like corners weren’t there and the acceleration was something else, this car does 1:19s
Apart from this Ron drove my V8 and I got to hear what it sounds like from trackside, awful !! It was obvious that under load it wasn’t running on all 8 cylinders, some might say what sort of a dill can’t tell it’s not on song when you are driving, well there is so much noise, banging and crashing going on I couldn’t tell, maybe it’s old age.
The car went back to the dyno and sure enough number 5 plug lead was failing so a new set of performance leads went in and she is back on all 8 cylinders.
