TECH TALK

Gearbox mysteries night

JUNE 19TH

At the club rooms, 34 members attended our tech talk evening seeking to avail themselves of the secrets and mysteries = of the MGB gear box including a display and explanation of the automatic gearb= ox by Richard Manning, (automatic gearbox guru)

From under the bench of my workshop I found a late model gearbox which came with my car from the U.S., I= opened it up so that we could see the components and how they all worked, which created a lot of interest.

Members pushed and pulled the select= ors, noting  what happens when you “crunch” reverse, rotated the input shaft noting the ratio chan= ges and how the gearlever selects the gears, and what cause the reversing light= s to come on.

The ladies got into it as well, aski= ng all the questions about cluster gears and bearings

A little group also intensely discus= sed gardening and knitting difficulties, I think lead by Gloria, (she knows all about gearboxes n stuff)

We then moved on to various comp= onents and why they wear out, and how we, as drivers accelerate the wear by our driving habits.

Now I hope that you all keep the fo= ot off the clutch pedal except when changing gears, this= was demonstrated by the display of a much worn carbon thrust, yes they wear away and a lot of work has to be undertaken to replace this small component.

Further to my driving lessons, was to discourage the habit of driving the car holding on to the gear leaver, as w= as shown, this causes wear to the forks and so a sloppy gear change=

Oh! And those down changes as we app= roach the traffic lights, no,no,no, brake linings are cheaper than gearboxes,

The components of an automatic gearb= ox were outstandingly displayed by Richard Manning (know to his “friends” as Dick) on Gold Stands, (if you don’t mind) who explained the operation and how the components were very similar to the ove= rdrive unit in our cars, An excellent and slick presentation concluded and informa= tive evening.

TECH TIP

Don’t forget to check the flui= ds next week end including master cylinders

Its winter a= nd wet, raise your tyre pressures 3psi so the grooves will work, that’s = for all cars

When did you last remove your “wires” and lubricate the splines??

Now, make sure you have tightene= d the wheels securely and check them after a run.

My thanks to Adrian Ackhurst who provided me with some “teaching aids” to display including a competition, Alloy Flywheel, Pressure plate, and Clutch Plate Assembly, very impressive and expensive, so much so that I had to sleep with it, (herself = was impressed)
