COMPETITION CORNER
From..Tim Edmonds, Motorsport Secretary
Since the last mag we have had 3 competition events, a motorkhana, with Wes Bray keeping the MG drivers flag going with support from Dave Beames and Graham Loader driving their non marque cars ( a report from Wes follows) the Winter Cup 2 hill climb ( a report by John Kemp follows) a multi club hill climb and I hope a well attended pizza night.
Coming events, August 10 motorkhana at Big W at Monarto starting at 9AM with entries on the day. August 17 is an MSCA super sprint with the MGCC supplying flaggies, if you wish to help please contact John Kemp, all flaggies are entitled to parade laps during the competitors drivers briefing at this event.
Also on the same day is the 50th anniversary of Lanac Park with a social run and display, details on page ???. Another hilclimb on August 31 entries close with the SCC of SA on July 20th sup regs on their web site. September 13 is the MSCA twilight super sprint, if you want to sprint in the dark this is the event for you, entries on the MSCA website, this sprint will also feature a “Come & Try” event for anyone that might like to sprinting to experience circulating the Mallala track with the option of an experienced driver in the passenger seat. Limited to 20 entries on a first in basis, 4 cars at a time for around 4 laps run during the tea break from 5pm, the cost is $25.00 which provides you with a single day level 1 CAMS licence, this is excellent value and is open to all members of the MSCA affiliated clubs, so if interested watch for the event entry forms on the MSCA web site and get in early!!!
Dorian timing for Super Sprints.
Dorian timers will be compulsory for sprints in 2009 and the sprint on this 17 August will be a trial for those members who have one already, normal manual timing will be used with dorian timing running in parallel.
The club has purchased 2 of these units to be used by members on a hire basis of $20.00/day, maximum of 3 days, this is to help members wishing to try sprinting with minimum outlay.
They can be purchased from the MSCA for $360.00 (RRP $440.00) until stocks they have purchased run out.
A long way in the future the Competition Register is helping Leyland organize a tech night at the clubrooms on Friday September 26, keep the night free more details next month.
MOTORKHANA 6th July 2008
From..Wes Bray
The second round of the Motorkhana series was held at Monato on the 6th of July. The day was fine but there was a very cold wind blowing across the course at the Big W distribution centre. At times this wind was strong enough to flatten the flags on the courses.
The event was organised by the Hotbricks - Modified Mini Car Club and so it was no surprise to see a relatively large number of short wheel based cars competing. With the Australian Championships being held in Adelaide in October there were also a larger than normal number of Specials competing. In addition there were some interstate competitors at the event preparing themselves for the National Championships. There were only 2 competitors from the MG Car Club, David Beames in his special and myself in the trusty 1100.
The 42 competitors had 2 runs on Try-angles, Double Kidney, Double Loop and Dollar. As time and daylight was running out the event director decided that there would be only one run over the final two courses, Paddy and Hopkirk.
As is usual at any motorkhana event there was a lot of noise as engines revved and tires squealed as they attempted to gain traction on the slippery concrete surface. There were also a lot of flags seen flying across the competition area after they had been hit by an over enthusiastic driver. At one stage I was advised by one of the timing officials to “Go slow and have a clean run. We have forgotten what one looks like on this course.” I ignored the bit about go slow but I did have a clean run.
At the time of writing this report no results have been sighted. I expect that I have ended up somewhere in the middle of my class as I was competing against a number of people who are new to the sport of Motorkhana. I would expect that David won his class and is close to outright honours.

Winter cup 2 13 July
From...John Kemp
Despite varying predictions by the Bureau of Meteorology for showers on Sunday July 13th, Winter Cup 2 was blessed with fine and sunny weather. It was however very cold and windy which would make fast times unlikely. MG Competitors were a bit thin on the ground with only five MG entries, Andrew Beattie (MGTF), Sue Day (MGB), John Payne (Supercharged MG P Type Special), Laurie Houghton (MGB V8 Roadster) and yours truly (MGBGT V8 Special). Stan Ward (Elfin F3) and John Tamke (Elfin Clubman) with their support crew of Jan Ward and Helen Tamke along with spectators Rob Hall and Greg Fulwood, completed the MGCC contingent.
Despite the cold weather, times were respectable with congratulations to Andrew and Laurie for achieving new personal best times. The rest of us had to be content with getting five runs for the day, even if we couldn’t do our personal best. Lucky for me that we did had five runs because on two of the five, I apparently hit the foam white posts adjacent to the timing box. This results in the run being discounted. The Sporting Car Club in their infinite wisdom introduced the posts some years ago to stop competitors cutting the corner. A practice I and many others employed in the past in the search for faster times. Fortunately my fastest time for the day was achieved with out penalty.
It’s worth noting that there’s a rumour circulating that the Sporting Car Club are considering returning the Winter Cup Series to closed events for their members only, as it was many years ago. This would be a great pity given the support the MGCC has shown Collingrove over the past 10 years particularly, although not evident at this hill climb with a relatively small MG presence.
Stan and Jan Ward again hosted the post event get together at their gracious home in Tanunda. As the numbers were small on this occasion, the select gathering of John and Helen Tamke, Laurie Houghton and myself were treated to fettuccini and Italian meat balls. Despite Stan’s protestations about there not being enough sauce, the meal was excellent and was accompanied by much humorous conversation. Stan was particularly entertaining with his stories of the cuisine he and Jan enjoyed or not, during their recent trip to China and Indonesia.
So if you’d like a great day of motor sport and entertaining company get your entry in for the next hill climb which is on August 3rd and entries close on July 30th. See you there.

From...Tim Edmonds. Motorsport Secretary and John Kemp
Having just returned from a very enjoyable MG Interstate Challenge I thought it was time to write an article for the magazine.
It started Friday night with most competitors and friends checking into their motel in the Barossa, Saturday morning started very early for me as I got to Collingrove Hillclimb at 7AM, after dropping my daughter at swimming at 5.45.
Saturday Hillclimb
The day got off to a good start with scrutineering and a slow drive up the hill for those who needed it. With the official runs starting it was great to see so many MG’s having a go with John Kemp getting FTD with a time of 34.89 sec,
Sunday Super Sprint
Sunday arrived being overcast and rain on the way. Practice and the first run were mostly dry with the next 3 runs in damp conditions. It was good to see so many new competitors and also the come and try competitors having a go, they all enjoyed themselves and I know that they will be out again soon. The day was won again John Kemp with a time 1:21.35.
Sunday night was a dinner and a talk by our patron Ed Ordynski about his time as a rally driver and instructor.
Monday morning it was time to hand out trophies and say goodbye to all from interstate. I would like to thank the organising committee ( Bev Waters, Margaret Lynch , John Kemp, Laurie Houghton, Fred Neild, Ian Curwen-Walker and Andrew Murray ) Peter and Margaret Hall, Sue Stephenson and other members of the MSCA and SCC of SA.
Tim Edmonds
In a reversal of usual practice, the Hill Climb was on Saturday which was probably a good thing since the rain came on Sunday. A wet Collingrove is not a pleasant experience. Not only is the track wet and the run off areas are as slippery as a butchers chopping block, the paddock becomes a bog more suited to mud pluggers. The timing gear again proved troublesome and the start was slightly delayed while John Tamke weaved his magic and got it running.
With the timing gear fixed the runs began for a great day of hill climbing. Wendy Rohlach the regular caterer was there and many people enjoyed an egg n bacon sandwich for breakfast or morning tea. I certainly did. Lunch consisted of the usual sausage sandwich for better traction and finished off with a Kitchener Bun - Ah! While this was happening of course the hill climb continued and the interstate competitors began posting faster times to trouble the locals. A great day all round.
Saturday night was free and many competitors stayed in at the motel and enjoyed the camaraderie so evident amongst MG competitors. Early to bed, because we all had an early start on Sunday.
Scrutineering at Mallala went quickly as cars had already been done the day before and practice sessions began. The lucky competitors who posted the faster practice times had the advantage of a totally dry first official run, as intermittent ran started and persisted for the rest of the day. This didn’t really dampen spirits as many enjoyed the slippery conditions as they discovered the limits of grip. In the latter runs the rain was more troubling for the faster cars except for Rodney Gibb who fitted “wets” and flew past myself and Bob Schapel and pulled away. Graham Loader in his Datsun 1200 Coupe claims if there had been a few more laps he would have caught me. Graham’s years of rallying coming in handy.
The Sunday night dinner at the Weintal Resort and the entertaining talk from our Patron and former Australian rally champion, Ed Ordinski were both excellent. Monday morning and a queue for scrambled eggs added to the excitement as we waited for the trophy presentations to begin. Well done to all competitors and SA in particular for again winning the event overall. Can’t wait for next year when we are likely to be hosting the MG Challenge again.
John Kemp
MG CHALLENGE
THANKS TO THE “FLAGGIES”
The MG Challenge is over for another year and the MGCC of South
Australia will be running it again next year, as the Victorians will be busy with preparations for their National Meeting in 2009. The Mallala Super Sprint was a great success despite the intermittent rain which fell during the afternoon. The successful running of this component of the Challenge, could not have happened if we had not been able to supply the
all important Flag Marshalls.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of the Flaggies for giving up their day to man the bunkers. They were:
MGCC Club Members
Eric and Owen Smith – starters for the whole day Eric Grey
Andrew Willington Peter Coulson
Nick Phillips Terry Wright
Peter Menz Neil Stagg
Glen Kirk Greg Fulwood
Wal Robinson from the MGCC of Victoria
Non MGCC Members
Debbie Hoffner Shannon Skinner
Paul Osbourne - friend of Club Member Roger Dawe
John Kaisler – friend of Club Member Andrew Beattie
Personally and on behalf of the MG Challenge Committee,
I thank you.
John KempMG Challenge Committee
MULTI-CLUB HILLCLIMB
From..John Kemp
The 25th May Multi Club Hill Climb at Collingrove was the last chance for MG competitors to practice for the all important MG Challenge in June. Neil Stagg brought his MGTF out for a run, Stan Ward dusted off the V8 Roadster instead of running the Elfin and John Tamke left the Clubman at home and drove his RV8.
Regular hill climbers were a bit thin on the ground but Bev Waters, Peter Goodale, Laurie Houghton, Andrew Beattie, Sue Day and yours truly were there. The support crews were there of course being Jan Ward, Judy Goodale and Helen Tamke. In fact Helen and John displayed their affection in a most demonstrative way which was captured, but can’t be published in a family magazine such as this.
The weather was fine and sunny although not especially warm so the track temperature was very average. This didn’t deter good times being posted by all competitors. Bev Waters did a very quick 40.13secs which was just shy of the magic sub 40.00sec run. Stan Ward also did a very quick run of 35.97secs which was close to his best from years gone by.
Highlight of the day for me was finally having a brace of Porsches or should that be a scrotum of Porsches in my class to compete against. In bygone days Porsches were always present and would persistently beat the V8 MGs. Well not this time – they were all vanquished by my new PB run of 34.34 secs which was good enough for 5th outright. Well that’s enough self praise from me except to say it has been a long held goal to beat all the Porsches.
Stan and Jan yet again invited members back to their home in Tanunda for a BBQ tea. The perfect end to a perfect day.

Clipsal 500 Adelaide Increases Support Of State Level Motor Sport
CAMS Media Release
20 May 2008
South Australian motor sport has been the big winner as a result of a recent decision made by the South Australian Motor Sport Board.
The Board, which promotes Australia’s largest domestic motor sport event the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, has decided to increase its financial support of the SA State Motor Racing Championships conducted by the Sporting Car Club of SA.
‘We have been supporting the Championships since 2005 and this year the Board is to double our contribution to further enhance motor sport at this level’, Clipsal 500 Adelaide Chief Executive Andrew Daniels said today.
Mr. Daniels said that the SA Motor Sport Board was ‘one hundred per cent’ behind motor sport and that the State Championships were a very important part of the mix.
‘Drivers, teams, pit crews, and race officials start their motor sport careers at this level and many of those people that regularly compete or officiate at the Mallala circuit in SA are integral to the success of the Clipsal 500 Adelaide. Motor sport is their passion and we are only too happy to assist’.
Mr. Daniels said the SA Motor Sport Board also provided a cash prize for the South Australian Motor Racing Driver of the Year awarded at the annual SA CAMS presentation dinner |
MOTOR SPORT REGISTER REPORT - MAY 2008
SUPER SPRINT ROUND 2 13 APRIL
From...John Kemp
Round 2 of the MSCA Super Sprint series had the threat of rain evidenced by the water laying on the ground, but it never came during the day which was much cooler than round 1 and very welcome. This was the last sprint before the MG Challenge in June, so it was a little disappointing that more MGCC competitors didn’t take the opportunity get some practice in. Club Members Adrian Ackhurst, Neil Williams and Rodney Gibb had competed in the Twilight Race Meeting on the day before and are excused.
We did have Bev Waters making her 2008 competition appearance at Mallala following her clutch problems from the week before. Again Margaret Lynch had work commitments which prevented her from entering to even more chagrin. David Maxwell also made his first appearance for 2008 in the Batmobile. Two V8s made their debut at Mallala in the hands of Laurie Houghton and John Tamke in his RV8. The other MGCC entries were Ron Gates, Barry Hawke, Greg Slatter, Andrew Murray, Eric Erickson and myself. Bob King was there in his RV8 and hopes to be a competitor at the Challenge this year.
Ron Gates had a trouble free day and was rewarded with a personal best time. I on the other hand didn’t have a trouble free day. During practice I threw the fan belt causing the temperature to rise and resulting in the heater outlet blanking plug on the water pump blowing off, just as I was braking for the Northern Hairpin. I spun in my own juice and came to rest in the kitty litter just of the track. With the help of Eric and Andrew we spaced out the pullies, replaced the belt and I was rewarded with a PB for the day.
Laurie Houghton was pleased with his first outing in the V8, but Barry Hawke who had never beaten Laurie’s times in his previous Datsun 260Z, was again playing second fiddle in spite of now running a turbo charged 300ZX. John Tamke found the RV8 a bit spongy compared to his Elfin Clubman – no kidding John, what a surprise.
The sprint was awash with Mazda MX5s as they were having a Challenge similar to ours so the MGBs had lots of competition. By the end of the day we were all ready to have a drink at the Mallala Pub. Maris and Marcy Valodze who had come along later in the day joined us at the bar.
If you want a run at Mallala before the MG Challenge then please consider the 6 Hour Relay Sprint on June 1st. You get to pick your target lap time so you can make it easy on the MG and get lots of track time to hone your skills.

MARQUE SPORTS CARS
CAMS Group 2B
Those members who regularly compete at the Sporting Car Club Hillclimb will be pleased to know that Andrew Murrays request to the MSCA to support a proposal to CAMS to split the current 1601 - 3000cc class into two, has moved to the next stage.
Ian Curwen-Walker, our CAMS delegate, has confirmed the state council endorsed the proposal.
Attached is a “copy” of the CAMS notification
This action was bought about early in 2007 by the SCCSA aligning the classes for Hillclimbs strictly in accordance with the CAMS class structure, for many years previously they had split the class themselves to better cater for the 1601—2000cc cars, like MGs etc;
The move to 1601—3000cc pitted our 1800cc MGs against a multitude of much faster cars in the over 2000cc area, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 litre Datsuns and 2.9 litre Porsches for example, totally unrealistic to even bother to compete.
As Andrew suggests we now need to lobby all the other MGCC’s and MSCA’s to support the proposal through their local CAMS delegates.
OTHER CAMS MATTERS
I have been advised by a couple of members and competition people from outside the club of problems getting licence renewals back from CAMS in the time frame that they published, this may have something to do with what looks like an exodus of staff from the CAMS head office, ( check their website, “employment opportunities” )be aware that delays could occur which can impact on your eligibility to compete at motorsport events, if in doubt contact the local CAMS office on………….

FROM: Ian Curwen-Walker - MGCC CAMS State Council Delegate.
Andrews letter concerning the classes for Marque Sports Cars was presented to the State Council meeting of CAMS last month (March).
This proposal was endorsed by the State Council and was to be passed to the Australian Motor Race Commission. Refer to Minute 05-0803-006-06.4 of the Minutes of that Meeting.

MSCA SUPERSPRINT Rnd 1
From..John Kemp
MARCH 2nd 2008
The first super Sprint for 2008 was a Club Championship event and saw some new driver/car combinations take to the track. Neil Williams with his race prepared MGF, Michael Dodds in a similar MGF and Brian Hills in the ex Neil Williams MGB V8. The other usual suspects Andrew Murray, Ron Gates, Eric Erickson and myself were there of course with the exception of our new MGCC Ladies Champion Margaret (Sprint Vixen) Lynch, who had a touch of tennis elbow making gear changing very painful. The Sprint Vixen had to unsuccessfully content herself with watching from the side lines.
The support crews were there in force and included Maris and Marcia Valodze, Graham Loader, Bev Waters, Joyce Williams, Joan Gates, June Bromley, Laurie Houghton, (whose new MGB V8 was on its way to Phillip Island in Rodney Gibb’s transporter) Rod and Jill O’Malley and Steve Bowra.
The day seemed hotter than forecast, which may have contributed to Michael Dodds’ MGF over heating and not completing all the runs. Ron had an unusual problem with his oil pressure sender breaking off when he touched it to check a small oil leak. Luckily this didn’t happen during his practice run and after some effort and help from fellow club members, the bits of the broken brass union were removed from the block and Ron did get a run at the end of the day. Brian Virgo circulated in the Marcos GT very consistently all day in the 1:26’s, could be a regularity winner here!!
Eric and Neil had a tight tussle all day as witnessed by their best times being separated by only .10 secs. Hillsy soon came to grips with the V8 power and achieved a very creditable time for his first outing in the car. Not faster than Neil’s personal best, but that no doubt is the target. In spite of his novel rear spoiler Andrew Murray didn’t dramatically improve his times from last year but was happy with the new engine although it does require fuel to complete four laps of Mallala. Enough said. I bettered my times from last year, but curiously have not yet achieved a time faster than with the 3.5 litre motor with half the power of the current 4.8 litre V8. Going faster has been hampered by oil surge problems and the suspension needs more work to cope with the extra grunt.
The MG Car Club thanks the Marque Sports Car Association, because without its existence we couldn’t run Super Sprints at all. Some of the club members stopped off at the Mallala Pub for a well deserved coldie and no doubt swapped a few stories about what might have been had things gone according to plan. That’s motor sport for you but let’s not forget, just participating is reward enough for most club level competitors, just as it should be.

PHILLIP ISLAND HISTORICS
From..Laurie Houghton
7—9 MARCH 2008
As a competitor for the second year running now, and as your editor, I can take some licence to write about the experience of being involved in this premier Historic Car race meeting, certainly in Australia and most likely in the southern hemisphere.
Run over 3 days and with 411 entrants listed in the program with entrants included from the UK, USA, NZ and Germany
The majority of Historic classes were catered for,
Formula Juniors (46 total)
Sa, Sb and Sc (55 total)
Q and R Sports (24 total)
J, K, Lb racing & Lb Sports (49 tot)
Historic Touring cars < 3li (56 total)
Formula 5000 (30) & 5 ex F1 cars
Historic Touring cars > 3li (50 tot)
M & O Sports racing (38 total)
Group A & C Touring cars (23 total)
Division 1 Regularity (52)
Division 2 Regularity (56)
Bill Schapel competed in group Lb and after an absence of some 9 years posted a fastest lap of 2.09.355 on Sunday morning while his good friend Peter Gostelow who drives a supercharged TC Spl in the same class posted a fastest time of 2.09.523 on Sunday afternoon, a pretty good effort from our Bill, the cover photo says it all !!
Rodney Gibb missed out on a place in Grp Sb and ran in Regularity Div.1
I ran in Div. 2 Regularity in the V8 with a new diff. and posted a fastest lap on 2.05.39 in the Sunday morning session, pretty happy about that as the car ran like a clock, no overheating, no engine missing and 135mph on the front straight, only now as the car is going a lot faster I’ll have to improve the handling.
I knew Andrew Murray and Roger Dawe were there over the weekend but with so many people about I didn’t catch up with any of them.
You need to be there to truly appreciate the sights and sounds, consider for a moment when 35 Formula 5000 racing cars are thundering down the main straight in a bunch for a rolling start.

COME & TRY MOTORKHANA
From... Laurie Houghton
16 MARCH 2008
Originally this MGCC Motorkhana had been calendared as Round 1 of the State Motorkhana Series incorporating a come & try component, however as the temperature throughout the preceding week was around 40 degrees almost every day, cancelling was considered.
The problem was that these events are “entry on the day” and there is no satisfactory means of advising competitors at the last minute to save them a trip to Monarto.
It was decided to journey up to the Big W warehouse and see who, if any, turn up and then make the call.
I took the trailer with all the equipment and Ian Curwen-Walker looked after registration, albeit a bit stressed on his own.
Surprisingly about 17 people turned up, most of them new to Motorkhana and were keen to give it a go.
Two course were set up by Dave Beames and helpers with no official timing, stop watches were used to give entrants an idea of their improvement
Our new Motorsport Secretary, Tim Edmonds looked after one course and Dave the other, a couple of experienced drivers, including Graham Loader were showing the novices how it was done.
Everyone had a good time with plenty of runs and I’m sure we will see these beginners back when the series gets underway.
Bev Waters arrived and took the photo of Tyson Jeanes in his MGTD (above)
Round 2 run by the Nissan Datsun club is scheduled for……….
Sunday 20th April. Watch for Club Notes in thursdays Advertisers !!!!!

2008 CAMS MOTORSPORT
CALENDAR
The following is the final draft of the SA/NT CAMS 2008 Calendar of Events,
Shown are motorsport events that will be of interest to members holding the entry level L2 licences, namely sprints, hillclimbs and motorkhana.
Our Club Competition Championship comprises a group say 4 events from each of the 3 disciplines and participating members can nominate say 9 of the available 12 events for their end of year results, the actual allocation of these events will be determined and publicised in the Jan/Feb magazine and shown in the calendar as 2 star events * *
There are quite a number of other speed events that are available and are not shown on this abridged list, for example, the Austin 7 car Club SA run Modern Regularity events in conjunction with Superkart races at Mallala, while the concept of modern regularity is slightly different from supersprinting it does offer the competitor the opportunity track time.
These are calendared for the 10th Feb, 6th Apr, 29th Jun, 27th Jul, 14th Sept, 19th Oct and 16th Nov.
Quite often the Sporting Car Club SA include modern regularity at their race meetings, so the same opportunity exists
Interstate opportunities also are available, in Victoria for example the Victorian Historic Racing Register conduct 2 huge Historic race meetings, Philip Island in March and Historic Sandown in November.
And AASA normally also conduct an Historic race meeting at Winton in October which includes regularity.
Motorkhana has been largely overlooked in the last year or so which is unfortunate as it can be a simple inexpensive introduction to motorsport providing the opportunity to hone car handling and driving skills at relatively low speeds.
The MGCC is a member of the SA Motorkhana Advisory Panel and each member club is charged with the running of 1 event per year, and it has always been the case that we conduct the first for the year normally used by members attending MG National Meeting over Easter as practice for the M/k at the Nat Meet.
There is a Come & Try Motorkhana at Monarto on 10th Feb ( now changed to March 16th)and if you would like to see what it is all about come along, contact Ian Curwen-Walker for more details.
At this point I havn’t even touched on the next level of motorsport, circuit racing, so watch this space for news on perhaps a resurgence of MGCC racers!!!!!
