Motorkhana Series Round 2,
Sunday May 22 2011
From...Murray Stephenson
Sunday May 22 started out cold and damp for the second round of the 2011 Motorkhana series at Monarto.
Although the weather threatened there was little more than an occasional sprinkle of rain which had no impact on traction.
There were forty nine entries including fourteen “come and try” entries and seven MGCC members. MGCCSA helpers including Curley worked hard in the cold wind to help us all have a great time and Chris Bray came along to cheer for Wes.
Hot Bricks delighted in testing us with some unusual courses including reverse and freestyle (plot your own course) events which added to the fun.
Competitors had a great time negotiating four courses with two runs at each course. Sadly a number of PVC pegs paid the ultimate sacrifice due to misguided enthusiasm but everyone had a lot of fun.
MGCCSA members acquitted themselves well, as seen in the results below, with Dave Beames setting a great time for the “Bullseye” (initially reported as a new class record but cruelly taken away by a check of previous events) and Scott Stephenson being top scoring Junior for the day. After a sighting run at the first course Bev was firing in the BGT although I did hear a call for the chiropractor after one particularly busy course.
Thank you to the members who came to compete, support and assist and if you haven’t seen or tried a motorkhana before come along next time, Sunday 10 July, to have a look or give it a shot.

Hillclimb 29th May, 2011
From... Bev Waters
A great roll up with 17 members taking part, despite a few regulars missing because of other club activities and commitments.
It was a slow track because of the cool conditions, but the rain held off until everyone had been able to complete four runs. Then the misty rain started causing the track to get a little slippery, and after seeing many sit on the start line spinning the wheels and getting no traction what so ever, many decided to withdraw from the last few runs.
The first time for Don Walker, listening to advice from all who offered and accredited himself very well considering the conditions. Eric a little exuberant on the first corner found some green grass, as did Scott around the bowl. Tim is back in the saddle again and was pleased to break 40 seconds on his last run.

MG Challenge
11—12 June 2011
From...Bev Waters
SA had 12 competitors and 7 support crew attend the recent MG Club Challenge in Victoria with good reviews from everyone.
Many headed off on Thursday for a leisurely trip, but there was the odd one who left early Friday morning and arrived in time to join the group for a social gathering in the Houghs/Houghton/Ruediger suite before heading off the indoor BBQ at the Eltham Gateway Motel where we were staying. It was a lovely venue which had seating for everyone, and the food top notch, which followed on throughout the weekend.
Wes didn’t leave until after work Friday, and with a hold-up in Ballarat because of an earlier accident, only managed to get into Melbourne a couple hours before having to arise for Sandown. Looking very weary, he still managed enough enthusiasm to complete a couple of his Regularity events before retiring for an early night.
Considering the weather we had on our travels over, it was far better than expected for the weekend, especially for Sandown with a cloudless sky for most of the day. The hospitality shown by the Victorian club & its members were great and nothing appeared to be too much trouble if anyone required assistance. This too, continued on throughout the weekend.
Driving Sandown was a great experience especially for many of our members it was their first time. Hugh did very well in the Regularity events and come home with a couple trophies. Eric collected a few more tyres than he required on his 3rd lap, but still managed to get back out on the track by lunchtime. Some of us would have desired and extra gear down the long straights, whilst others enjoyed the spirited driving with their fellow competitors.
Trevor & Bev Driver just happened to be visiting family in Melbourne that weekend, and Trevor was good enough to volunteer his services on the Dummy Grid for the day.
Saturday evening, we enjoyed a Spit roast at the MG Clubrooms and SA were lucky enough to score a free ride on a mini bus driven by Ken Price (the Victorian Competition Secretary) – Was this a strategic move? However it was really appreciated instead of trying to maneuver our way around Melbourne once again.
For those who have not been to Rob Roy Hillclimb before, it is a Hillclimb to get into the venue with a steep ascent with loose gravel at its entrance. Unfortunately because of the banking up of traffic into the entrance, many were caught stationary on the upward climb (and many with trailers). Getting traction was virtually impossible, and with the Houghs already experiencing a few slipping clutch problems, this was the final straw for their clutch. (I believe a report elsewhere from Geraldine). Once the traffic was cleared, many of the trailered cars had to be pushed to assist with getting mobile.
The fog was quite heavy and low, so there was a short delay in getting the event underway, and everyone had the opportunity for an observation run of the track. Times were generally slow because of the cool and damp conditions of the track, but by the last run, times started to come down.
That evening the presentation dinner was held at the Gateway Eltham and another good time had by all. Unfortunately we were not the recipients of the MG Challenge trophy, but our members accredited themselves well.
Support crew consisted of Judy Goodale, Chris Bray, Joyce Williams, Kath Webber, Shelley Bazzica, Laine Turner & Rob Peckett, (Has he got re-enthused?).
Probably my only criticism of the weekend was that the classes were conducted under the MGCC Victoria Competition Classes rather than the MG Challenge classes. Whilst similar, there were a few discrepancies.
The results are calculated using the MG National Meeting ‘Nuffield Trophy’ formula, and final results were as follows:
SA 10.10points Geelong 11.17 MGCC Victoria 14.54
As many of you are aware, the MG Challenge event has been alternating between & SA and Victoria for many years, but lapsed in 2009 because MGCC Victoria were organizing the MG National Meeting, and in 2010 SA ran the National Meeting. The event appears to be now back on track and with a lot of interest.
The Victorians are already talking about coming to SA next year, so we need to start making some enquiries and plans to put to the Committee for a 2012 event here in SA. If anyone is interested in being involved on an organizing Committee, or a Sub Committee to run the competition events, please let me know.
Cheers Bev
A note from Hugh Webber: “”A big thanks for a fantastic weekend - it certainly was a great event not only the competition but especially the hospitality shown to Kath and I by everyone – it was a bit daunting being first-timers!!!!!

MG Phillip Island Adventure
With an entry list of close to 500 historic cars, Phillip Island in March is an event not to be missed. A veritable feast of Motor Sport, from several Formula One cars from the 80s back to the pre-war cars in our event, through ex-Brock, Johnson, Richards and Fury sedans and the savage, rumbling Formula 5000s there is something for everyone, with huge fields in each race. Spectators are well served with shops and stalls and a good view of most of the circuit. All the major car clubs have car displays around the area, adding to the atmosphere.
The “Schapelli Racing Team” of Bob and Bill Schapel, with spanner-(wo)men Hayley and Georgie were well supported by Terry Wright, Reg O’Malley, Trevor Driver and Andrew Willington, who towed Bob’s supercharged TC over. We were installed in our usual spot on the lawns near turn 4, surrounded by MG racers from Melbourne, who make us very welcome. As Bob’s second race meeting after a 12 year absence, the pressure was on for him but we were in high spirits. Friday morning, ready to practice and we discover two cylinders full of coolant in my car! So it was head off in between Bobby doing a fine job of practice and qualifying. My two girls also mucked in – removing and preparing exhaust system, body side and engine side-plate. Loved it! Unfortunately a day of hard work for Bob and I, but we were still having fun. This would put me to rear of field for race one next day, but I was pleased and relieved to be out there at all!
That night we had our now traditional BBQ at our house, with about 30 “MG and invited” guests so we enjoyed a red or two and some excellent food and company before a reasonably early night. Hayles and Georgie did a fine job preparing and serving and made everyone welcome.
Feature cars for the event were three Maserati 250Fs. Just a cool 3 to 5 million dollars worth each and they were in our races! First race was a lot of fun. I started 38th and worked up to 18th which I was very happy with. Bob had a fine time until his fuel pump died with a lap to go, so he was ROF for the next event! The fuel pump had been untouched since Reg O’Malley cleaned the points some 25 years ago, so Reg got the blame. Naturally.
Race two was memorable for me in that I got up to 10th from 18th in just 2 laps until I was punted off through the kitty litter and grass by the same gentleman who drove me off two years ago – one Ray Sprague in his pre-war Ford V8 hot-rod. Ouch! Took off all the clips under the car, left the main battery cable hanging on the road and crudely adjusted my clutch for me, plus lots of little dents on the lower body. The man is a menace. Kitty litter at close to 90mph is a rough and scary ride – lots of air and thumps and always the risk that if you don’t stay straight you can roll over. I rejoined in 26th spot and worked up to 19th by the end. Bob had a fantastic drive, from last to 10th outright and a class win! He took 16 spots on his first lap, 6 on his next, and a place each lap after that. Not bad after all those years absence.
Sunday morning it was raining, heavily, when we woke. Very pleasing when you have perhaps 85 bhp and your opposition has much, much more. Unfortunately for me, and great for almost everyone else, it stopped just before the first race and the sun shone again. The track, however, was still a little greasy so I was able to get a good start and was up to 7th and in front of one of the 250Fs and immediately behind Bobby after just one lap. As it dried out the 250F was long gone, with his 300bhp, and I was under more pressure. I fell to 10th, but re-took a couple to finish immediately behind Bob. We were 7th and 8th outright, and 1st and 2nd in class! A fantastic race, with lots of dicing and passing.
The last race was Bob’s best result with yet another class win and 6th outright, but I lost some places, enjoying myself all the while and having a great dice with Dick McNight in his supercharged Proton Lotus 11. Each lap I would get past in the twisty bits and he would gather me up down the straight. At the end he passed me almost on the line. The gap was .15 sec, and we had a great chat afterwards. His car’s nose was only inches from my right knee into Honda corner one lap, and Hayley captured it on her fabulous camera. Dick loved the photo and he was amazed I didn’t hit him on a few occasions when he was almost out of control in front of me. I suspect we are now good friends… until we are next on the track! I was only 12th but still 3rd in class, probably a more realistic dry weather placing for me in a field of 35 as the damp track had flattered me in the morning.
What an exhilarating weekend! Three class wins and high outright placings – remember there are three Maserati’s in front too – for Bobby, and a class second and third for me, plus a head off repair job, a rough ride off the circuit and some amazing dices. While I pray for more horsepower down that long straight I do enjoy the beautiful flow and sweeping corners of the circuit. So wide, so smooth and fantastic to drive. Hayley took lots of amazing photos, as did Reg and Terry, and I know they again enjoyed themselves. I believe more of you should join us next year. We have good accommodation available opposite our house and the social side of the event, the eating out and obviously the cars and the racing make it un-missable, in my view. Come and join us next year!
Epilogue: While the girls flew back for work and Terry and the gang towed Bob’s car back to Adelaide, Bob and I drove to Prahran, stowed the red TC in a neighbours garage, and moved in with friends Tom and Jacqui Fogarty for the week. We went to the footy at the MCG, visited the Fox Motor Museum and then worked as Marshalls in Pit Lane for the GP. Our sister Jill (MG car club member, owner of a Y sedan) and nephew Tom were at the GP too and enjoyed a pit lane tour and seeing Uncles Bill and Bob with Vettel and Webber, respectively, on the form-up grid. We are allocated drivers by lot, and we just got lucky! Quite a leap from our cars to the high-tech of F1, but we always enjoy the experience. But no-where near as much as doing it ourselves, in our own small way, at the Island!
Phillip Island, probably the weekend before the GP, March 2012. Be there!

MGs at Easter Historics
Mallala
Great weather and good racing was the order of the day – or all three of the days – at Mallala and Collingrove over the Easter weekend. Bob Schapel in the blown MGTC special was dominant in the Group K and L races. He convincingly won all three scratch races from pole position, setting fastest laps in all but one of the five events. Opposition from John Virgo’s 3 litre Riley and interstaters Brian Simpson (Cooper JAP) and Shane Bowden (Prad Holden) was vigorous but Bob won convincingly despite their best efforts. Bill Schapel’s TC special retired from third place with overheating issues in race one, but recovered to finish fifth from starting rear of field (P18) and be second in class in race two. Notable among the nine interstate visitors in our races were our good friends Terry White in his blown TC, who gained two second places in the two handicap races, and Adrian Brooks in the gorgeous “Bill Pile special” MGTC. Terry had a fabulous weekend and his car performed faultlessly, but Adrian’s car blew a diff so he was a non-starter for the last race and unfortunately had to miss the Collingrove Hillclimb the next day. Lindsey Hick drove well in his “new” blown MG PA special, which by the end of the weekend was running very sweetly and getting faster each time it hit the track, and Chris Hunt was also enjoying the regularity events in his TD.
Collingrove
At Collingrove we were pleased to see John Payne in the blown MG J2/TB and the ex – Steve Tillet GP winning MGTC special, driven by owner John Ellis and also by Bob Congdon. John Payne drove with his usual pizzaz to pip Bill Schapel’s TC by a tenth of a second, but Bob’s car was even quicker so he again had to front up for a trophy. Poor Bob! John of course won the pre-war class from Lindsay Hick, but Lindsay had improved by over a second on every successive run, so he was already a happy man and beaming with delight at the little silver car’s smooth performance. Arthur Reudiger drove his road-going MG TC faultlessly and Cara Pearson again impressed in the MGB with an increasingly confident display.
Thanks to Troy Ryan, Joan Shearer and their many helpers for a great weekend of motor sport.

Collingrove set the scene for a great day with great weather and friendly rivalry between the troops. As can be seen from the results, there was some close competition as times improved throughout the day. The new timing system allowing two cars on the track at once, certainly gets through the field much quicker and allowing more time for extra runs, and also less waiting around.
Scott Stephenson is starting to give his dad Murray grey hairs already, as his times get too close for comfort. At 15yrs age and his second event at Collingrove, he broke the 40 second barrier with his last run of the day, which many of us are still striving to do after years at it. Congratulations Scott.
Warren Litchfield achieved fastest MG time just in front of Laurie and Chris, there was also keen competition between Wayne, Arthur & Bev, and Geraldine not far behind taking three seconds off from her first to the last run, and also forming a close competition between herself and Karen at events – this time 0.2 of a second between them.
Lindsay Hick was plagued with mechanical problems throughout the day, and was not able to complete a good run. I understand that he has now overcome the problem and performed well at the Historic Event over Easter.
Stan Ward is still dominating the Non Marque class on the hill, although Murray is closing the gap with now only half a second behind.
I would like to thank all the members who tried to assist me with my fire extinguisher issue. Finally a coat John Ellis and also by Bob Congdon. MSCA Six Hour Regularity May 1
By Murray Stephenson.
The MSCA six hour regularity event was run on Sunday May 1 at Mallala. Initially Team Emgee had six drivers and six cars but two withdrawals prior to the event caused some concern. Fortunately Bob King stepped up to give us a fifth car and driver joining Laurie Houghton (MGBV8), Don Walker (MGB), Hugh Webber (MGZS) and Murray Stephenson (Honda Civic) for the day.
A wet practice session caused a number of teams to revise their nominated times, much to their later dismay. The track dried during the first half hour and no more rain was seen, leaving some teams to struggle to drive slowly for the rest of the event.
Team Emgee ran smoothly with complete reliability, no breakdowns, spins or mishaps finishing thirteenth of twenty teams with a 40.67% achievement (Winners on 54.68% and last on 19.17%). As a team we scored 27 bonus laps (close to nominated time) but 42 breakouts (too fast) more than accounted for them. Sadly it is too hard to slow us down!
We all had a great time on the day thanks to the whole team and in particular the workers on the wall and in the timing, Eric Erickson, Tony Freckleton, Steve Bowra, Scott Stephenson and Lainie Turner, with a special thank you to our Team Manager, Bev Waters.
Well done Team Emgee, let’s have another go in 2012.
Junior Development Program (JDP)
The CAMS JDP has been successfully run by Southern Districts Car Club (SDCC) at Lanac Park for some years and SAMROA (SA Motor Racing Officials Association) has started another JDP at Tailem Bend with more of a bitumen focus (hillclimb, circuit, sprint). The program targets 12 to 16 year olds and consists of four half-day sessions spread over four months in which the participants have some driver training (cars supplied) as well as exposure to road safety, vehicle preparation, road law and competition. The dates for 2012 are 27/8, 24/9, 29/10 & 12/11.
SAMROA is seeking participants to undertake the training and experienced competitors to assist with the training.
I am sure MGCCSA knows of some worthy students to train (children, grand children) and some highly skilled competitors with valuable experience to contribute.

I would like to welcome Murray Stephenson as our new Assistant Motorsport Secretary. Very enthusiastic and I am sure he will be an asset to the position and on the Executive Committee. Thankyou to Paul Roundhill, Peter Coulson and Steve Bowra who also offered to assist throughout the coming year.
Murray’s first assignment (volunteered as well) to write the Magazine report on the Motorkhana.
Unfortunately I was not able to attend this event, and I would like to thank Tim Edmonds for stepping in as Director, and helping to organize since January to ensure it got off the ground. Thanks also to Peter Coulson, Chris Bray, Steve Bowra & Rob Hall for timing, as well as other duties, and our MG competitors who helped set up the courses and pack up after the day, and to Adrian Flynn and David Sakko from the Motorkhana Panel for assisting where needed.
Coming Events:

**April 17th: Collingrove Hillclimb
* 6hr Regularity Relay – Mallala. : We are still looking for two more drivers and some volunteers to assist on the day. If interested, please call Murray or myself as soon as possible as entries will be closing soon. Entries now available on the Sporting Car Club Website
**10th-11th June (Long weekend) MG CHALLENGE – Victoria. Sandown Raceway on the Saturday, and Rob Roy Hillclimb on the Sunday. The MG Challenge has always been a great weekend of friendly rivalry and MG comradeship. Initial enquiries, we have around 17 competitors interested in going along with a few social spectators.
Accommodation will most likely be in Lilydale, and will email the Motorsport Register details as they come to hand which we should receive later in March. All new enquiries welcome, and any member wishing to be on this email list for all Motorsport information who is not already on it, please let me know.
Congratulations to all the Annual Motorsport Award winners. Highly contested this year with 45 members competing in the varied motorsport disciplines. (Results refer AGM report). Results are based on the performance of a Member in an MG at eleven selected events in 2010. Whilst there are many more events to which the club is invited to take part, the number of Club Competition events are limited at which points are awarded, keeping in mind the various other activities the club holds during the year
At the recent CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motorsport) Annual Dinner, Rodney Gibb received an award for the SA Recipient for the most consistent and successful in circuit motor racing for 2010, and Adrian Akhurst winner of the MGF Trophy for the Series winner. Congratulations to both.
Have a fun filled and safe year of motorsport in the year ahead.
Good luck to our SA members going to Newcastle for the MG National Meeting at Easter.

Motorkhana Series Round 1,
Sunday March 6. 2011
Sunday March 6 was the first round of the 2011 Motorkhana series at Monarto. As the club running the event, the MGCC team was first to arrive to set up the course and take entries. Sixty two entries were received including sixteen “come and try” entries and twelve MGCC members. Unfortunately, the electronic timing gear did not arrive, it was securely locked in a car in Adelaide and the whereabouts of the key was unknown, so manual timing had to be used. Competitors had a great time negotiating four courses with two runs at three of the courses. There was some very spectacular driving from some who were more at home drifting and the usual mix of tidy runs, wrong directions and skittled pegs but all had a great time. MGCC members acquitted themselves well as seen in the results below:
Thank you to the members who organized the event and made it possible for the competitors and spectators to enjoy a wonderful day of competition. It was also great to see so many MGCC members present competing and spectating and hopefully we will see as many at the remaining rounds in 2011.

MSCA SUPER SPRINT ROUND 3
19th SEPT 2010
from Graham Loader
On Sunday 19th Sept a cool sunny day greeted us at Mallala for the MSCA Super Sprint Round 3. With some of the regulars overseas ( enjoying themselves at Goodwood Speedweek ) and others helping out with timing for the Sporting Car Club 400m sprint at Tailem Bend, our MG entrant numbers were down. Eric Erickson had agreed to have a remote control movie system fitted to his car and he performed a very good spin on the northern hairpin for all to see ( Graham Loader had a very close view being only a few metres behind ). Eric is sure it was caused by the extra 2.5kg in the boot ! Baz had minor starting problems with the B V/8, but managed the fasted time of the day of us all. Hugh Webber showed how to spin in turn 1 if the foot is lifted too quickly, settled down for some consistent runs and no doubt is pleased with his improved times. Chris Bucknell entered his lovely MG Racer but unfortunately had misfiring problems all day and was unable to rectify it. Graham Loader is finally getting used to driving a front wheel drive vehicle and posted a personal best in the ZR. Bill Schapel had a trouble free day in his TC Special showing no signs of the possible head gasket problem from the previous round. Murray & Scott Stephenson had a trouble free day in the little Civic, Murray posting a very fast time and Scott improving and will be giving some of the older drivers a hurry up soon. John Davies also enjoyed himself, travelling in luxury in the Mazda 6, he is getting quicker with each outing.

2010 MULTI CLUB HILLCLIMB COLLINGROVE
ROUND 4 SUNDAY 29TH AUGUST 2010
With only 63 entries on the day, the runs promised to be pushed through, and this was the case. By noon they had already had 3 of the 6 runs for the day, and had time for a lunch break. Believe me, this was exceptional, as up to now this year, you would be lucky to have 2 runs and no lunch break, even with lesser starters.
The weather helped, sunny periods, but dry & cool track.
The MGCC had 10 competitors who all run through the day without incident.
The usual hillclimb participants were absent, which gave others a chance to achieve the Fastest Time of the Day (FTD) and a bonus point to Club Champion. This was achieved by Chris Hunt in his MGB V8 Roadster with a time of 37.93 seconds, achieved on the 6th run of the day. Chris has found a new lease of life with this car and only keeps on improving. To break the 38 second barrier is terrific.
Chris has a secret I must share with you. He polishes, yes polishes, the car between each run. In fact he was so absorbed polishing after one run, he nearly missed the call to formation, and after 2 calls, we had to yell at him to break the polishing spell!
Wayne & Geraldine entered their MGF. Wayne gave it away after 3 runs whilst Geraldine ran 5 runs and is only 3 seconds slower than hubby Wayne.
Graham Loader entered his MGZR, which has been subject to suspension modifications. He found the settings too soft around the wall and was jumping across the track, and he tells me he only remembered he could have tightened down the fully adjustable shockers to cure the problem a couple of days after the event. It will be the first thing he does when he enters next time. He had trouble keeping the peak power on, which only comes on after 6000rpm, and tried smaller 15” wheels (usually runs 17”) which only partly cured the problem, so he has more homework to do on the car.
The Stephenson family were all competing.
Murray in his trusty Honda Civic, which I was told only weighs 800kg, and is partly why he posts such good times for this car. (A hot motor, racing rubber, and a good driver are the other parts.)
Wife Karen in a stock standard Mitsubishi Mirage shared the car with son Scott (age 14) who both put in respectable times. Karen tells me she was a keen driver before children came along, and is now enjoying getting back behind the wheel here at Collingrove, sprints at Mallala & motorkhana’s.
At one time not long ago we had sufficient women drivers to field a grid at a MG Challenge. Where have they all gone?
Arthur Ruediger in his MGB GT V8 and son Craig in his thumping and very much improved Ford Falcon XA GT (5766cc V8) were in the same class and had less than a second difference all day, in Craig’s favour. Both were keen to beat each other. Healthy father/son rivalry.
Although I do think Craig had the hardest task punting the GT up the track. The car is nearly as wide as the bitumen, and was running on BF Goodrich street tyres 10 years old! The noise from the Ford V8 was a great crowd pleaser.
Vic Moore, a member since 1996, who joined with his MG TF 1500; since sold and now driving a Porsche Carrere 3.2litre, had a solid day, but was not able to get under 39 seconds.
It’s great to see our members out on the track in a variety of cars, all enjoying the experience. Remember it’s all about driving within your capabilities and reminding yourself your still alive!!
This was the last MultiClub Hillclimb for the year in which entrants gain points for MGCC Club Champion of the year.

VIC RACERS COMING TO

MEET & GREET THE VICTORIAN RACING TEAM BBQ
Over the weekend of Sat/Sun the21st & 22nd of August the MGCC of Victoria Racing Register, comprising over 30 MG’s, were coming to Mallala for Round 3 of the SA Circuit Racing calendar. The incentive for participants was a 20% bonus on points won on the day towards the year’s results.
When our racing members went to Winton earlier in the year they enjoyed the hospitality of the Vic’s, and Bev & I were asked by MGF racer Rodney Gibb to see if the Club could return the hospitality, to which we agreed. It was also a great way to meet and socialise with our fellow MG members from Victoria.
On the Saturday night we had 27 visitors from Victoria, including their President, Mike Herlihy and approx. 40 local members. Bev organised the meat (superb) from her local country butcher, and we all brought along a salad or a sweet. The Vic’s loved our local beer!
The night was a great success and everyone mingled, putting faces to names, and making new acquaintances.
Thanks must go out to the cooks on the night: Neil Williams, Andrew Murray, Laurie Houghton & Eric Erickson. Mike Greenwood & Berry Treffers gave up their time to run the bar all night. Thanks also to the ladies who helped all night with the catering:
Bev Waters, Cheryl Neild, Geraldine Hough, Jan Dinan, and Karen Stephenson.
Without everyone’s help the night would not have been as successful as it was.
It’s what being a Club member is all about.
Fred Neild
MotorSport Secretary
PS: We were able to confirm on the night the MG Challenge, to be held over the Queens Birthday long weekend in June 2011 will be a sprint at Sandown raceway & a hillclimb at the historic Rob Roy facility. A sit down dinner, possibly at Sandown on the Saturday night, and a BBQ on the Sunday night, followed by a breakfast & presentation of trophies at the Vic’s Clubrooms are being organised.
Keep the weekend free, and we will keep you informed of final program, costs, & accommodation later on. If you want to be added to my email list please send me an email requesting further info.
Regards
Fred |
The Victorian MGCC Racing Register fielded a grid of MGs at Round 3 of the SA Circuit Racing Championship on Saturday/Sunday 21/22 August at Mallala, run by the Sporting Car Club SA.
Some 20 cars made the trip from Melbourne for the event, those that came picked up a 20% bonus to their championship points score.
Friday the 20th was a practice day at Mallala and some of the entrants came over a day earlier to familiarise themselves with the circuit.
Our club entertained these visitors at the clubrooms on the Saturday night with a BBQ.
We saw the best MG racing out at Mallala over the weekend as well as a variety of other groups of racing machines.

| MOTOR SPORT REPORT For September 2010 |
SUNDAY 25TH JULY 2010
COLLINGROVE HILLCLIMB
Held 2 weeks after the MultiClub Hillclimb, numbers were again down from previous years, with only 57 starters. This of course meant for those that turned up they had plenty of hill time.
The morning was bitterly cold, with ground temperature close to zero, and air temp of 3C. Fortunately the sun came out, and gave some relief whilst standing around waiting to start.
I drove there in my open clubman, and I never felt so cold in my life. I think next year I’ll have to invest in another light weight trailer.
The Sporting Car club was training a new crew to run the event & the timing, and whilst there were unexplainable delays, they managed to accommodate 6 runs.
Stan Ward in his Elfin open wheeler flew up the hill recording a best time of 33.47, the 4th fastest of the day, 1.57seconds behind first.
Fastest in an MG on the day was Warren Litchfield in his modified MGB with a best time of 37.77. Warren is very focused when he hits the track, and after a disappointing first run of 52.07sec, he changed tyres and achieved a second run of 39.79sec. Unfortunately on the 3rd run Warren left the track and glanced the tyre wall and finished on the other side of the track. Help eventually arrived and after much discussion and delay on how to remove the car, Warren was back in business. The car was now sporting a large white graze from headlight to the tail light on the left hand side. Ouch!
The next three laps saw Warren improve his time to achieve FTD for an MG, which in light of what happened at the wall is fantastic. Most competitors would have either packed up & gone home or driven a lot slower.
Chris Hunt in his newly purchased MGB V8 roadster is showing major improvement each meet, and has a driving style like John Kemp. Flat out, and let’s see how many wheels I can get off the ground. His time of 38.07 looked faster and to see him fly over the left hander at the top of the first hill is very entertaining. His car has so much power he has to take off in 2nd!
President Wayne in his MGF is steadily improving, and whilst he only had 4 runs, he was happy with his best time of 42.45.
Yours truly was next in my Chevron clubman with a time of 42.47. This was my first time in the new car at Collingrove, and it certainly had plenty in reserve. I would hope to be quicker next time. Otherwise there will be a clubman for sale.
Geraldine Hough was enjoying herself and had a best time of 46.23 sec. Geraldine is a bit of a petrol head, and it’s great to see her on the track. Would love to be a fly on the wall when she beats hubby Wayne!
Lindsay Hick, a new member, and son of Tony Hick, was competing in his TC Special and achieved 47.28 as a best time. The car has plenty in reserve and I understand the car has had recent improvements courtesy of Bob Bazzica which will see faster times from Lindsay and the TC.
Everyone enjoyed the day, even Warren, and when not competing we had plenty to talk about with other competitors. Hill climbing is fun and safe and can be attempted by anyone in any car. Even my wife Cheryl wants to have a go after her day at Mallala.
NOTE: I will be away until the 1st November 2010 so if you have any queries please contact Bev Waters either by email or phone. Details are in the front of this magazine.
See you on the track

MSCA DRIVER TRAINING DAY
MALLALA SUNDAY 8TH AUGUST 2010
Held once every year, the MSCA runs a Driver Training Day to encourage new participants to experience Mallala in a non competitive environment. The idea is for less experienced drivers to be accompanied by a mentor, who will give them advice on braking, gear changing, and corner lines, before letting them go around Mallala by themselves. Speed is not the objective, only smooth safe driving.
The weather, a major factor whenever we go to Mallala, was cold and windy, but it was not raining. A big bonus, believe me. The garage we hired was well patronized with hot tea/coffee & biscuits but we must invest in a small heater for the girls when they get together for a “chat”.
Eric Gray, Paul Roundhill , Steve Holmes, Tony Freckleton , Cheryl Neild, Cara Pearson,
Michael Bugg, Frank Harris and Lindsay Hick were having their first run at Mallala.
Once they had driven around the track, everyone was circulating and enjoying themselves. Most were lining up to go out again straight after coming in!
Laurie Houghton and Peter Coulson were regulars enjoying unlimited track time.
I must thank the mentors who came along to help our Club members; Hugh Webber,
Laurie Houghton, Dave Maxwell, Neil Williams, and Fred Neild.
Laurie was observed giving Cara Pearson a white knuckle ride in his V8 MGB around Mallala which could only be loosely termed “mentoring”. Thankfully she was more sedate when driving her MGB by herself.
Our flag marshal volunteer for the day was Terry Wright, and I thank him for giving his time to help the MSCA run the event.
Everyone enjoyed the day, there were no incidents or mechanical damage to the cars, and there was plenty of track time all day.
The event gave the newcomers an insight into Sprinting at Mallala, and like most things in life, once your tried it, it’s not as daunting as first thought. Hopefully we will see them out at future Mallala sprints.
Visitors to come along to give support were the Hick family, Graham Menz, Barry & Deidra Burne, Graham Green, Steve Bowra, Paul West, and Anthony Pearson.
See you on the track
