MGA/MAGNETTE REGISTER MEETING 26 MAY 2011
This meeting was held at the home of Karin and Lindsay Caffin at West Lakes Shore.
Apologies were received from Karen and Murray Stephenson, Ian and Dee Denny, Mike Greenwood and Jan, Trevor Driver, Trev and Sandy Dicker (in Phuket), Raeleen Semmler,
Jasmine Goode and Graham Hamilton who was having surgery on his shoulder. Hope all is well now Graham.
It was not a great night weather wise, so apart from the Caffin’s MGA which was in the shed, the only other MGA out on the night was Noddy who came with Dennise and Nick Micklem.
There were twelve members who signed the book and we were treated to a wonderful evening.
Lindsay and Karin have purchased a new toy – a Mazda MX5 –very nice. In addition we enjoyed learning about Lindsay’s other passion – home brewing. It is perhaps better to describe him as a boutique brewer – there is nothing simple or ordinary about his set up.
We tasted his Hefeweisen Light, which is brewed from 50% wheat and 50% barley. Once brewed, Lindsay does not bottle his brew, he sends it to a keg and it is drawn up through a temprite system by ornate beer taps. Its fair to say that nothing gets in the way of a good brew.
Lindsay needed a more secure
method of lifting the heavy mixture once it has been cooked (I suspect that is not the correct term), so he cut a hole in the roof of the shed and installed a fairly heavy duty winch to help him out.
After a tasting, Karin showed her garden to Geraldine and myself. They have just about everything growing; fruit trees, citrus, veggies, herbs, aubergine, an avocardo tree and even hops for Lindsay’s beer. Very impressive, expecially because of the vast range of produce.
Karin and Lindsay spent many years in Japan and their house reflects years of collecting furniture and other knick knacks – beautiful carved vents, furniture with hidden drawers and beautiful kimonos.
All up a very interesting evening, which was not as much about the cars, but more on the micro brewery Lindsay has set up.
Next Register meeting is at the clubrooms on 21 July 2011, 7 for 7.30 start. We have a DVD on the Goodwood Revival to view and we will be celebrating the late Gerald Palmer’s birthday with a cake. (There will be more info about his design career at the meeting).
