MGA & MAGNETTE REGISTER REPORT

From Sandra Cardnell

Thanks to Mike and Jan for the hospitality at the May Register Meeting. The Register book tells me that there were 27 members present and five register vehicles plus a couple of other MG’s.

However, I think there are some names not listed – Mike’s son, Justin comes to mind.  So just a reminder, that attendance at the register meetings counts towards MG Car Club Member of the Year award, so its important to sign the book. We had apologies from Trevor Driver and the Semmlers.

Mike and Justin demonstrated the car rotisserie with Justin’s Magnette on board.  It was simply a matter of adjusting a couple of levers and it was possible to turn the car 180 degrees with very little effort – or so it seemed.  Justin is clearly a talented man with the engineering side of things. Probably takes after his Dad eh Mike.

We had a short meeting where Arthur updated us on the current state of rivalry between himself and Wayne Hough on the racetrack and at Collingrove.  The score seems to be about level at the moment.

A few of the MGA register group attended the Barossa Weekend event. We had a wonderful time – one of our group was awarded the perpetual trophy for “most entertaining”.  This will be held by Denise Micklem for a month at her home, before being returned to permanent display at the club.

So just a reminder that the next meeting will be held at the clubrooms on 15 July at 7 p.m.

I am hoping that as a result of some letters I will be sending out to  the members on the register, we will be able to entice some members we have not seen for a while to this meeting.

Well, its back to normal; by the time you read this, we will have been to Mike Greenwood’s and I am starting to organize the July Register Meeting at the Clubrooms.

This will be held at the clubrooms on July 15th from 7 p.m.  I am hoping to contact a few ‘old’ register members and invite them to the July meeting.  Perhaps that is you – if so come along and renew old acquaintances or make new ones.

Wayne Hough has offered me a DVD featuring an MGA competing in a famous Italian race, the name of which escapes me for the moment.  But, if you have anything which may interest members i.e. old programmes from Mallala in the sixties and seventies which featured MGA’s or promotional material from the time, please bring them along.

So if you have a Magnette or an MGA (roadworthy or otherwise) come along on the night and have a drink and a chat – supper, courtesy of my housekeeping budget (apologies to Gloria George for stealing Leyland’s catchcry) will be provided.  For that reason, a quick text to me on 0419169540 will help with catering arrangements.  Even if you don’t have register vehicle, but the evening sounds interesting, remember everyone is welcome, so come along on the night.

THE CARDNELL REPORT FOR MAY 2010

On 18th March we headed for the Port Adelaide Sailing Club for our regular meeting.  Twenty eight members attended; seven MGA’s and three ‘B’s.  With the exception of the Ogdens, an enjoyable time was had by all.  They spent the greater part of the evening incarcerated in the secure parking area for the powered boats.  They were waved in by the security guard, who promptly locked the gates behind them.  Several phone calls later they were released and they joined us at the right place.  Sue had her revenge – some of their garden received an extra ‘water’ – hopefully not caught on the security video.

The MGA/Magnette register was well represented at the recent National Meeting.  At the Friday Noggin and Natter, Arthur, Wayne, Nick Micklem and the MGA girls entered the rocker cover racing.  All racers were well presented and, with the exception of the girls entry, which was eliminated in the first round, raced well.   Denise Micklem and I accepted the award for the ‘best looking’ entry – some local bias perhaps!

At the concours at Elder Park there were various MGA and Magnette vehicles.  However, only one winner, the Twin Cam MGA owned by Alan and Raeleen Semmler.  Congratulations on first place.

Pirates of Abbingdon on Saturday night brought them all out.  I think there were more bad pirate jokes that night, presented by some very odd looking pirates, than there were “aargh” comments.  Even the bad jokes failed to dampen the spirits and a really fun evening was had by all.

Although we did not go to the Motorkhana, several register members did and performed well.  We did however go to Mallala on the Monday and were following the fortunes of the Stephenson’s – Murray, Karen and son Scott (14) in the MGA.  It is perhaps luck, or maybe good driving, but Scott (and the car) survived two spins.  The second was more spectacular, lots of dust, but eventually the car and driver emerged in one piece.  Missed the wall by a whisker though.  Murray was relieved to say the least.

As first time participants in a National Meeting, I have to say the weekend was great.  We met new people, some from our own Club, looked at exceptional MG’s and thoroughly enjoyed the social events.  Congratulations to the organizing committee.  Alan and I are certainly looking forward to attending more in the future.

So, its on to the next meeting to be held at Mike Greenwood’s home, 20 Grange Road, West Hindmarsh on Thursday 20 May at 7 p.m for 7.30 p.m.  Mike has only recently purchased another TD, so there is an restoration opportunity for his other one perhaps, as well as an opportunity to view his other MG’s, too numerous to mention.

Sandra

Although we did not have a register meeting in February, several vehicles attended the All British Day at Uraidla.  Compliments to the organizers of the MG display in the middle of the oval – by far the most impressive we have seen and reflects the passion of our club. I took a few photos of the MGA’s present.

By the time you read this, we will have been down to the Port Adelaide Sailing Club and there will be a report in next month’s magazine.

So now, it’s all hands on deck for the National Meeting at Easter.  We picked up regalia last week and are very happy with the colours chosen.  Thanks to the regalia team.  See you at Easter –

Sandra

We enjoyed a successful mystery run on Sunday 17th January 2010.

Thirty one members had a long and robust breakfast at the Scenic Hotel at Norton Summit.  Eleven A’s, one Magnette, one MGCGT, one TD and six MGB’s transported us there.

I had spent the week worrying about 40 degree weather, but on the day, there were showers.

It was not too wet until we were on the way home.  At Newton we stopped at the traffic lights and had a giggle when we saw the Hough’s with their golf umbrella – up.  We were not laughing half a k down the track when it poured.  Rain was stinging my face and visibility was not good. I was moved to mention the inadequacy of the windscreen wipers on an A.  Alan, by this time wet and a little jaded, told me the water was on the inside and I lapsed into silence.  I should  know better than to  criticise his first love.

The next Register Meeting will  be on Thursday 18 March at the Port Adelaide Sailing Clubrooms at  George Robertson Drive, Largs North (on Snowdons Beach).  It gets under way at 7 p.m. for BBQ tea.  BYO meat, salad. .

David Archdall has been told that the Port Adelaide Sailing Club is concerned that our visit may place them in breach of the provisions of the Liquor Licensing Act.  Therefore a member will open the bar on the night for us.  Prices are similar to our club drink prices - $3 for a light beer, $3.50 for regular, wine $18 bottle, so we need to get together on that.  So BYO drinks are not permitted.
Sandra.

All welcome – see you there.
