MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 9 June, 2011.

David and I were holidaying in May so we missed out on that lunch run – our thanks to Geraldine for minding the shop while we were away. Sorry to say that we didn’t give the camera a thought this time so no photographic record of the day, which is a pity as this is a very appealing venue. We returned for the second time to the Fleurieu Golf Course at Mt. Compass where the elevated dining room, besides being spacious affords an uninterrupted view of the natural bush surroundings with an added interest of the grazing kangaroos.

We received many compliments from the members on the food, where we had a choice of two mains as well as a couple of desserts. The sweets were extra and consisted of plum pudding with custard & ice cream or a brandy snap basket served with berries and cream.  Most of us found this offer too irresistible to refuse.

This was an ideal opportunity for the participants to catch up after the weekender that took place at the end of May and thanks to Chris Richter and her merry band of helpers, who organized this event as it was another resounding success this year!

We have been very fortunate with the weather for most of our runs. This time was an exception as the run was longer and the showers consistent. A few of us took the longer route to Meadows as we bypassed the first signpost to this place – thank goodness the majority of our group made the right choice. Mostly MGs made the run and John & Gwenda Buckby take the prize for bringing their TC.  John & Pat Shipley came this month for the first time and joined the run at Echunga.

If you haven’t managed to come along to a lunch run as yet, it is never too late to join us for the day and if you have recently entered retirement it is a great way to meet fellow retirees from the club.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 14 July, 2011 to the Bridgewater Inn and if you would like to come please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes ph.8336 4557.

Thanks to the attendees this month.

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 14 April, 2011.

What a really great day! Thanks to all the wonderful attendees, who took the trip out to Semaphore to The Flying Knife restaurant where the proprietor is a member of our club. Chris had driven his MG to work and when we arrived, he was waiting at the entrance to the car park to guide us into the small area at the back of the restaurant. We had 57 members on the day and amazingly all our cars fitted into this space. As you can see by the photos, there was a fabulous concentration of MGs, which kept a number of the members entertained after lunch.

The food was truly delicious with generous servings, nevertheless some members couldn’t resist the tempting desserts and by the comments I received, they were very pleased to have indulged in these delights. We thank Kirsten and her staff, who offered friendly and caring service to our group of lunch runners. We were indeed fortunate to have the whole restaurant at our disposal and we comfortably filled this space.

It was balmy weather and the views from the elevated position overlooking the water added to the relaxing atmosphere of the day and there is no doubt that this will be a very favourable repeat venue for next year. We will be returning to the hills for the runs over the coming months. This year they look amazing as they haven’t browned off over summer so we need to take advantage of that situation.

Although the numbers were limited for this venue, we didn’t need to turn anyone away. The members cancelled in time for us to accept other bookings and we appreciated the contact.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 12 May, 2011 to Strings Bistro at Racquets SA at St. Marys and if you would like to come please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Geraldine Hough will be taking the bookings for May. PH. 8251 4807.

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 10 March, 2011.

We have had various meeting places for the lunch runs starting with Eagle on The Hill back in May 2004 and moving on to the Crafers Inn in July, 2005. This venue has had the most repeats for the start of our runs and we were back again this month after a long absence.

When we arrived, there was a large platter of biscuits for us on the counter and when I checked my records I discovered that we haven’t met there since June 2010. Over the course of time we have added to the list of starting venues, which now amounts to six and this adds to the variation of the routes.

March saw a return to The Windsor, which has a vast dining area and our group of 50 hardly makes an impression on the area. They offer a wide-ranging senior’s menu, which is very popular with our group and the cost is a low $11.50pp.

The first quarter of the year is behind us so we have made further bookings at the Bridgewater Inn in July and a return to the very popular Doncho’s Restaurant at the Virginia Nursery in August. The Internet helps to keep me up to date with the many changes that occur in the hotel industry so that there is always something new for consideration.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 14 April, 2011 to the flying knife restaurant, 6 Semaphore Road, Semaphore and if you would like to come please phone us as bookings are essential. Diane & David Holmes. Ph.8336 4557.

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 10 February, 2011.

I believe the photos speak for themselves when I say that we had another great day this month with our fabulous group of lunch run attendees. David & I are delighted with the response we get each month to this event. The Maid is becoming a popular meeting place & from there we wended our way to The Lakes Resort Hotel on the shores of West Lakes. The Lakefront Bistro has a split level dining area to ensure their patrons can take full advantage of the views across the lake & our club filled the lower level to capacity with close to 70 members in attendance. As it is summer the venues remain within the Adelaide area & so far this year we have been without the threat of bushfires.

Last week I received a phone enquiry from a member of another car club as he had read the report in our magazine about our lunch to Paech Farm. He was considering it for one of their events so I was happy to endorse that venue & we would also give this one our recommendation. There were so many good features besides the setting & the staff took the prize for expert service.

We appreciate seeing the colour edition of this report on our website with thanks to Mike Greenwood’s efforts. I have just booked a couple more venues and the magazine states the Cudlee Creek Restaurant in May, however we have had to reconsider that one due to the new owners increasing the price. Instead we’ve booked at the Strings Bistro at Racquets SA, St.Marys as well as a second visit and a much longer run to the Fleurieu Golf Course at Mt.Compass in June.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 10 March, 2011 to The Windsor, Windsor Gardens and if you would like to participate please phone us as bookings are essential. Diane & David Holmes.Ph. 8336 4557.

Thursday 13 January, 2011.

Usually the weather is hot for the first mid week lunch of the year, so it was surprisingly that we had light rain for most of the day. As a result the MGs remained dry at home, though there will be many opportunities to use them on runs in the coming months. We begin each year by meeting at a designated hotel with no run beforehand and it’s always a happy reunion when we get together after our holiday break. This month it was a first time venue for us at the Morphett Arms Hotel at Glengowrie.  Although we had over 60 bookings, there were only 53 members in attendance on the day, due I imagine to the lapse of memory through the long Christmas break.

This pleasant hotel dining room accommodated our group very comfortably and there was table service for everything except the salad bar. The daily specials menu was available to us and it was good to see there was a different selection of meals at this venue. Many members had arrived before 12.30pm and the last group lingered on until about 4.30pm.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 10 February, 2011 to The Lakes Resort Hotel,  West Lakes and if you would like to participate please phone us as bookings are essential. Diane & David Holmes.Ph. 8336 4557.

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 11 November 2010.

For the last lunch run this year we tried something a little different from the usual scheme of things. During the year Laura Smith had mentioned this venue to me as a possibility for one of our lunches & had followed that suggestion by sending me a coloured brochure in the mail. Thank you Laura as we finally made it out to Paech Farm at Mt. Barker after the very wet spring to make arrangements for a barbecue lunch to be held in November.

The property has been in the Paech family since 1908 for four generations.  Steve & Bev Paech are the present owners & they have been collecting memorabilia since about 1970, which they enjoy sharing with their visitors. The exhibits ranged from stationary engines, tools, railway items, books and working exhibits for the men to some beautiful items of clothing made by Steve’s great grandmother of interest to the ladies as well as large marriage certificates embellished with a floral design, family photos & a tiny iron that caught my eye, which was used strictly for the purpose of ironing lace. Another feature of the day was the glorious spring garden surrounding the home and an invitation to the members to wander in it.

When we were making the booking in the kitchen, I thought the food would be good when I saw the Aga still in use and discovered that Bev was a keen cook. This proved to be the case with the wonderful combination of tasty salads to accompany the barbecue, which was expertly cooked by Bev’s daughter. Bev catered for the vegetarians by making individual quiches and later on we were presented with a beautiful array of slices and cakes to accompany tea & coffee. We all appreciated her generosity.

The whole day was beautifully coordinated by Bev & with the members remembering BYO chairs & alcoholic beverages it made for a grand finale for 2011. We allowed for 50 members, which was above their usual quota. Our apologies go to the 12 members, who left it to too late to book this time. There is a possibility that this can happen again so please book early to secure a place

Next year we will be meeting for lunch at the Morphett Arms Hotel, 138 Morphett Road, Glengowrie on 13 January, 2011 at 12.30pm. There is no run that day, however the runs will resume in February, 2011. Please remember to book if you would like to participate. Diane & David Holmes. Ph. 8336 4557.

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 14 October 2010.

Although the forecast didn’t look promising for our run this month, we were fortunate that it turned out well on the day; so it was tops down for quite a few cars on one of our longest runs to Port Elliot. This is an excellent venue where the numbers swelled to 70 members in September ’09. That resulted in the dining area being rather crowded last time so when we returned to our usual number of 50 this month it made for a very pleasant dining experience.

During October, David & I have been busy organizing the venues for next year in readiness for the 2011 club calendar. We have followed up on some suggestions we’ve received from members & one of our newer members has a restaurant with a lovely view overlooking the water at Semaphore.  We’ve called in there & they are very willing to accommodate us & our cars so that is booked for April 2011. A couple more pubs, which will be new to us, have been booked as well as one for a return visit to The Windsor in the first quarter of 2011. We look forward to you joining us as we begin another year of lunch runs.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 11 November 2010 to Paech Farm, Mt. Barker & if you would like to participate please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes Ph. 8336 4557.

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 9 September 2010.

The Adelaide Hills were wonderfully alive this month. After the very welcome spring rains there was a torrent of water rushing through the hills & we were able to view this refreshing sight on our way through the gorge via Kangaroo Dam to our destination at the Blue Gums Hotel at Fairview Park. The Chain of Ponds was also included in the drive, so again, wonderful to see as it was filled to capacity.

The day began by meeting in the comfortable surroundings at the Tower Hotel, chatting with the familiar faces as we lingered over coffee. We entered the hotel in cloudy weather conditions, however an hour later on returning to the car park it was a magnificent sunny day.  A great introduction for the members coming along for the first time & this month we were pleased to meet Jim Hanna’s wife Joan as well as John & Sandra Tarrant.

The Blue Gums provided a 3 course lunch for $11.90 pp plus hot vegetable & salad bars. David & I received many compliments from the attendees on the fast service & tasty meals provided by this venue. A creamy vegetable & bacon soup was followed by a choice of five main meals & there was an orange drizzle cake with fresh cream to complete the lunch.

Thanks to all the members for your participation in this event to make it such a success as well as your suggestions for future venues, which you kindly bring to our attention.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 14 October 2010 to The Elliot, Port Elliot & if you would like to take part please remember to book & we need to confirm numbers for the venues.  Diane & David Holmes Ph. 8336 4557

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 12 August 2010

For the last month in winter it was a shorter run than usual and a return visit to McQueens Tavern at Angle Park where they have a very generous offer available to seniors with the price managing to remain at $8.50 for the main meal including a free glass of beer, wine or soft drink. I believe that is the best deal available to us & it was enjoyed by the 46 attendees present on the day. We were expecting the numbers to be in the mid fifties. It is unusual, but about 10 members forgot to cancel this month. No excuses need to be made when making a cancellation. We just appreciate a phone call or e-mail. Thanks to all the ones, who remembered to contact us.

Another venue was introduced for our meeting place & it appeared to be well received by our group. David & I have driven past The Maid at 1 Magill Road more times than we can remember & just recently we called in to check if it was a possibility to meet there. The location & the generous parking area with access from both main roads made it ideal for us so we will avail ourselves of this in the future.

Spring is here for the next run when we will be driving through the hills to our destination at Fairview Park and in October we can promise a longer run when we head down south to The Elliot at Port Elliot. Last September we found this to be an excellent venue on our first visit.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 9 September 2010 to the Blue Gums Hotel, Fairview Park & if you would like to participate please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes Ph. 8336 4557.

Thursday 8July 2010

The Tea Tree Gully Hotel was the meeting place this month & from there it was an easy run to Doncho’s Café & Restaurant at the Virginia Nursery. This nursery has many attractions besides the plants & when the business was first established in 1992 it was to supply vegetable seedlings to commercial market garden growers. From there it moved slowly to become South Australia’s largest garden centre. The café first opened its doors in August 2009.

This is a very pleasant & attractive place to visit & the complex includes a gift shop, pet store & fruit & vegs. shop. And if you are a gardener they cater for your every need. Where many nurseries haven’t survived since the water restrictions were introduced, this vast garden centre appears to thrive in the current climate. Sixty three members attended the lunch & enjoyed the shopping experience offered at this venue. There were many favourable comments regarding the food. Six main courses were available from the menu & very generous servings were delivered to our tables.

Again there were members coming along for the first time this month & they were Barry Burne, Kathy & Danny Ridge & Roger Ford.  We also caught up with Neville & Ivan Butler again. Thanks to all the regular attendees for making this a very successful event & a special thank you to John Buckby for encouraging me to take a look at this venue in the first place.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 12 August 2010 to McQueens Tavern, Angle Park & if you would like to participate please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes Ph.8336 4557.

AUTUMN LEAVES LUNCH RUN
From ..Geraldine Hough

As Di and David were taking a short, well-earned break for May, I supervised the Mid-week Lunch Run on Thursday, 13th May on their behalf. About 30 members, in MG’s and other cars, met at Crafers in the cool morning air for a warming coffee and the start of the run.

We left the Crafers Inn at about 11:30am and set off along the Piccadilly Road, Old Mt Barker and Old Carey Gully Roads into the orchard areas around Balhannah, Oakbank and Lenswood.

The sun shone on all the MG’s out for the day and the autumn leaf colours through the lovely Adelaide Hills were breath-taking.

We all wended our way down again via Fox Creek Road through Inglewood to the Tea Tree Gully Hotel where we were joined by the other MGCCSA members who were unable to make it to the early run. This made a total of 39 for a very nice lunch and lots of chat about MG’s, the fast approaching Weekender and other fascinating subjects.

Thank you to Di and David for planning such a marvellous autumn outing for us all. I am sure that I speak for all Lunch Run attendees when I say that we really appreciate the huge amount of time and effort that you both commit to the monthly Mid-week Lunch Runs by bringing us such a wide variety of lovely runs and great venues.
