MID WEEK LUNCH RUN NEWS

Email:

Thursday 8July 2010

The Tea Tree Gully Hotel was the meeting place this month & from there it was an easy run to Doncho’s Café & Restaurant at the Virginia Nursery. This nursery has many attractions besides the plants & when the business was first established in 1992 it was to supply vegetable seedlings to commercial market garden growers. From there it moved slowly to become South Australia’s largest garden centre. The café first opened its doors in August 2009.

This is a very pleasant & attractive place to visit & the complex includes a gift shop, pet store & fruit & vegs. shop. And if you are a gardener they cater for your every need. Where many nurseries haven’t survived since the water restrictions were introduced, this vast garden centre appears to thrive in the current climate. Sixty three members attended the lunch & enjoyed the shopping experience offered at this venue. There were many favourable comments regarding the food. Six main courses were available from the menu & very generous servings were delivered to our tables.

Again there were members coming along for the first time this month & they were Barry Burne, Kathy & Danny Ridge & Roger Ford.  We also caught up with Neville & Ivan Butler again. Thanks to all the regular attendees for making this a very successful event & a special thank you to John Buckby for encouraging me to take a look at this venue in the first place.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 12 August 2010 to McQueens Tavern, Angle Park & if you would like to participate please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes Ph.8336 4557.

BIRTHDAYS & LUNCH AT
OLD NOARLUNGA

From..Diane Holmes

Thursday 10 June 2010

Thankfully we didn’t experience much rain today although it was overcast most of the time. As it was the beginning of winter it was a refreshing sight to see the rolling hills already clad in green as we drove south to our venue at Old Noarlunga. This drive affords some wonderful views travelling along the ridge on Piggott Range Road & Coxs Hill Road.

On arrival at our destination it appeared such a quiet little hamlet, however when we stepped inside the hotel it was a hive of activity & such a different scene to the one David & I saw last Friday when we called in there during the planning of the route. The trip from Crafers took about 45 minutes with just 4 sets of traffic lights to navigate on Main South Road. What a time saver!

Unfortunately we forgot to take the camera with us this month. When we arrived at the venue we discovered there were two members with birthdays in June. One being Arthur Ruediger, who was present & the other was Lawrie Foody, who turned 80 at the weekend. We celebrated this event with a lovely cake, which was kindly delivered to the hotel by his granddaughter. The cake was intended to be a surprise, however as Lawrie was unable to attend on the day we chose to sing happy birthday to him via a phone call. We missed you being there at the lunch, Lawrie & Lyn.

New members this month, Anne & Ian Moulds came along for the first time & appeared very much at ease with our wonderful group of 55 attendees. The total number booked for this month was 60, and then five cancelled on the day. Nevertheless this probably worked in our favour as this venue was a bit of a squeeze with the extra patrons sharing the dining room that day. Our compliments went to the efficient staff serving such a large crowd & providing the extra service with the birthday cake.

Thank you for your suggestions for future venues as we were able to take advantage of Bob Booth’s recommendation for today’s hotel & last November at the Kimber Run, John Buckby urged us to take a look at the café at the Virginia Nursery. We’ve been, we’ve seen, we’re impressed & we’ve booked for July. Please keep those suggestions coming to us.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 8 July 2010 to Doncho’s Restaurant & Café at the Virginia Nursery & if you would like to come please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues.  Diane & David Holmes Ph. 8336 4557

AUTUMN LEAVES LUNCH RUN
From ..Geraldine Hough

As Di and David were taking a short, well-earned break for May, I supervised the Mid-week Lunch Run on Thursday, 13th May on their behalf. About 30 members, in MG’s and other cars, met at Crafers in the cool morning air for a warming coffee and the start of the run.

We left the Crafers Inn at about 11:30am and set off along the Piccadilly Road, Old Mt Barker and Old Carey Gully Roads into the orchard areas around Balhannah, Oakbank and Lenswood.

The sun shone on all the MG’s out for the day and the autumn leaf colours through the lovely Adelaide Hills were breath-taking.

We all wended our way down again via Fox Creek Road through Inglewood to the Tea Tree Gully Hotel where we were joined by the other MGCCSA members who were unable to make it to the early run. This made a total of 39 for a very nice lunch and lots of chat about MG’s, the fast approaching Weekender and other fascinating subjects.

Thank you to Di and David for planning such a marvellous autumn outing for us all. I am sure that I speak for all Lunch Run attendees when I say that we really appreciate the huge amount of time and effort that you both commit to the monthly Mid-week Lunch Runs by bringing us such a wide variety of lovely runs and great venues.

THE MID-WEEK LUNCH RUN REPORT

FROM DIANE HOLMES

Thursday 8 April 2010

Surprisingly the last visit to the Willunga Golf Course was in 2007 & we were fortunate this week to have picked the best weather for the run, following the winding route through Clarendon, which is a vey picturesque part of the hills. You may remember last visit quite a large number of members arrived late as they’d lost their way. Not so this time.

Next month we begin the seventh year of the lunch runs & it’s interesting to note that there are many more places out there for us to visit. We thank the members who have suggested venues to us in recent months so we’ve followed this up with a booking to the Old Noarlunga Hotel in June & we are in the process of organizing a run to Doncho’s Café & Restaurant at the Virginia Nursery for July.

As the lunch run closely followed the Natmeet we were pleased that Ray & Faye Schiewe from the Gold Coast were able to join us for lunch. It’s great to have the company of interstate members. David is in charge of the photos, which speak for themselves by highlighting the congenial atmosphere of the day.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 13 May 2010 to the Tea Tree Gully Hotel & if you would like to come please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Geraldine Hough will be taking the bookings for May. Ph. 8251 4807

Thursday 11 March 2010

Autumn at last!  It was a beautiful day & many took the opportunity to have the tops down although it was only a short run, which meant there was just a small interruption to the eager conversations between morning coffee & lunch.

We were glad to see Rod & Jenny Byrne back again after a break away due to illness & we were so pleased that Lyn Foody was able to make it again for lunch. This was a first time venue for us at The Tonsley & it was their website, which encouraged me to take a look in the first place. On the day it surpassed my expectations as we had a very attractive, spacious room to ourselves, catering for our group of over 50 members this month. The food was delicious & above average, also confirmed by the comments from our group.

This wonderful gathering is now running like a well oiled machine & I thank the members for the courtesy they extend to us by informing us of their movements & in general keeping us up to date. This makes all the difference to our enjoyment with the running of this event. If you haven’t managed to come on a lunch run so far, please keep it in mind to join us in the future.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 8 April 2010 to the Willunga Golf Course & if you would like to come please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes Ph. 8336 4557.

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 11 February 2010

Although it wasn’t forecast there was some welcome relief today from a very hot week. We were greeted with overcast skies & even & little rain when we met in the hills at Crafers for the beginning of the first run for 2010.  It was a shorter run than usual as we travelled down Greenhill Road, which affords one of the best views of the city & today it looked especially appealing to see it without sun for a change.

Our destination was The Windsor at Windsor Gardens & it was a first, but unlikely to be a last visit to this venue.  I would be interested to know the history of this hotel, however it is the extensive newly-renovated premises at the back, which concern us now. Our group of around 50 members fitted very comfortably into the large open plan dining room. The seniors’ meals were available at $11.50 including a free vegetable & salad bar with a wide variety of delicious choices on offer.  The seniors’ menu had a great selection including a curry of the day, lamb shanks & salt & pepper calamari.

The lunch runs present a great opportunity to get to know fellow members so please consider coming along at any time to join us for the day. We look forward to meeting new members & also those who have recently entered retirement.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 11 March to The Tonsley, Clovelly Park & if you would like to participate please phone us as bookings are essential. Diane & David Holmes Ph. 8336 4557.

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 14 January 2010

This month we meet for lunch only & the runs will resume in February once again. The Alma Tavern was the venue & although we’d lunched there three years ago the interior had been completely transformed since that time. The three course seniors’ menu was available to the 46 members participating in the event.

During the summer months we tend to focus on places in the suburbs, away from the threat of bushfires in the hills & country areas. The opportunity also allows us to linger longer over lunch as afterwards there’s a shorter drive home & during the cooler months you can look forward to lengthier drives in the MGs.

Please keep it in mind that if you are free on the second Thursday of the month & would like to participate in the event, it only takes a phone call to make a booking.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 11 February to The Windsor, Windsor Gardens. If you would like to come please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes Ph.8336 4557.

MID WEEKLUNCH RUN NEWS
From Diane Holmes

Thursday 12 November 2009

David came up with the idea for the mid week lunch back in 2004 when he was president & at that point in time we had no concept of how this event would develop over the coming years. It is held on the second Thursday of each month & November was the last one for the year as we take a break in December. Thank you to all the members who participate in this experience, whether it is on a regular basis or a casual one.  We can see it is a growing market as our members enter retirement with available time on weekdays and MGs offer a fabulous interest for these years.  In fact they are an ideal leisure pursuit at most times throughout our lives.

November’s lunch run happened to coincide with the second heat wave Adelaide has experienced so far this spring. Most of us travelled in air conditioned plastics to air conditioned venues, but unfortunately I discovered on the day that The Great Eastern Hotel which held our booking for lunch was in the process of improving its system.  We met at the Victoria Hotel & drove north through the hills in a wonderful sea of green foliage & caught our last glimpse of the green hills before they are toasted gold for summer.

At the November lunch we were given a couple of new venues by our members to check out for next year so it is great to see that we can still find new places to visit. Your suggestions are very much appreciated so please keep them coming for us all to share.

Next year we will be meeting for lunch at the Alma Tavern, 66 Magill Road, Norwood on 14 January, 2010 at 12.30pm. There is no run this day, however they will resume in February, 2010. Please remember to book if you would like to participate. Diane & David Holmes Ph.8336 4557

Thursday 10 September 2009

Members all the way from Clare with Mick Mitola
Some more of the 50 members along for the meal

Spring has arrived & it was certainly evident when we drove down to the Hotel Elliot this month. It was a magnificent day to view the green countryside, which continued all the way to the south coast & the transformation was beautiful to see. The Wallis Tavern at Mt. Barker was our meeting place & we appreciated the generous space provided by this venue as our attendance had expanded to 70 members, which happens to be the largest gathering so far for this event.

We were really pleased to welcome the group from Clare & Mick Mitolo, Mike Herbert & Col Chapman also made their first appearance at the lunch run. This drive was a little longer than usual, but worth the extra travelling time as the hotel provided an excellent menu matched with very proficient service for the full dining room.

The Muirheads and the Browns

It hardly seems possible that there are only two more occasions for lunch in 2009 as we will continue with the tradition of a break in December. However we will be meeting in January to begin it all over again for 2010. Next year is in the planning stage & we can look forward to visiting some new venues as well as returning to some of our favourites.

As you can see another tough day at the Office!

Next mid week lunch run will be on 8 October 2009 to the Lobethal Hotel, Lobethal & if you would like to participate please phone GERALDINE HOUGH THIS MONTH Ph. 8251 4807

Thursday 13 August 2009

When we first visited Grumpy’s Brewhaus in March 2008 it was during the longest heat wave on record in Adelaide. This month we were warmed by the wood fire as we shared a variety of delicious pizzas & the price was still the same at $10 per head.

We arrived earlier than our usual time of 12.30pm. & by 12.40pm the serving was underway & the lucky ones were already tucking into the food. As Grumpy’s is not open to the public for lunch on Thursdays we had the place to ourselves.

Fifty members were in attendance this month & it included first timers Rick Charlesworth & Christopher Hunt.
We welcomed back some of our regulars, who have been on holidays & there are more travelers returning from their vacations next month when we go to Port Elliot.

On Friday David & I called into Chappy’s Resaurant to book for our November lunch to find that Mark has sold his establishment this year, however he is only a short distance away at the Great Eastern Hotel in Littlehampton.  He has already renovated the pub dining room, which now seats 75 people & his chef has also moved to the new location so that will be worth a call.

This morning we were pleased to receive a booking from Clare for our lunch to Port Elliott for a group of six people driving down in 3 MGs for the day. Please take the opportunity to join us for any of the lunches throughout the year as we do enjoy meeting new faces.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 10 September to the Hotel Elliot at Port Elliot & if you would like to participate please phone us as bookings are essential. Diane & David Holmes Ph.8336 4557.
