Parades & Displays

Christmas Pageant
Sunday 12 December 2010 –
Assembly at 4.30pm
By Jeff Jeanes

This was first time that the Campbelltown City Council had conducted a Christmas Pageant and the MG Car Club was invited to join by the Council through contact made by Club Member Ann Calver working for Brock Harcourts in Magill.

The parade, running along Stradbroke Road was extremely well organised with the MG’s being paired up into 5 groups through the parade.  Each pairing was identified by a numbered bollard making our positions very easy to locate.

It was a glorious warm evening, simply perfect for open top motoring with a gentle breeze.  The crowd lining the road created a great atmosphere with many requests being made for MG’s to be placed in Christmas stockings by Santa.

The pairing of Gloria & Leyland George and Laine Turner & Bob King (with the Pageant Princess, Laine’s Granddaughter, Hayley sitting on their car) had prime location behind the Robern Menz float.  There was plenty of competition within Bob’s car for collecting and consuming fruchoc samples being handed out from the float.  I believe Laine made a late run, narrowly defeating Hayley in the carpark of the Rezz.

The parade concluded at Thorndon Park where we broke off to remove the tinsel and other Christmas decorations from the cars.  A number of participants took advantage of discount vouchers handed out to the newly renovated Rezz Hotel, remaining for dinner.

Participating in the Parade were;

Jan Dinan & Mike Greenwood  MGTD
Ann & Rod Calver                     MGB
Jeff Jeanes                                MGB
Ray Barnes                               MGA
Gloria & Leyland George          MGB
Laine Turner, Bob King & Hayley                  RV8
Barry Burne                              MGF
Janice & Gary Chapman          MGF

Bay Sheffield
28 December
By Gerry Rankine

Sun shining, beautiful evening approximately 4000 people gathered at Colley Reserve to witness the spectacle of the final day of the 123rd Bay Sheffield 2010.The club was asked to provide cars for the Cavalcade of past champions before the running of the Mens and Ladies 120m sprint finals and after to honour the winners of the two main sprint events to culminate the evening.
Participating were:
Gwneda and John Buckby        MGTC
Marc Read                                                                               MGTF
Jan Dinan and Mike Greenwood                   TD
Gerry Rankine                         MGB
Gloria and Leyland George     MGB
Alison and Ashley Packer                                  MGB
Laine Turner and Bob King      RV8
Michael Meston                                                            MGB
Tim Owen                                                                                MGB
Trevor Praite                                                                           MGB
Those who have participated in this cavalcade before will testify that the event is a Highlight for the year and I would thoroughly recommend members consider taking Part next year, even if the ‘old hands’ have to stand by. The cavalcade is a great opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and display our wonderful vehicles.

Our congratulations to Jordan Caldow (17yrs old) and Tamara Dartnell, winners of the Mens and Ladies 120m sprints. I’m sure their joy was enhanced by having a lap of hour in John Buckby and Mike Greenwood’s classic MGTC and MGTD.
Upcoming Parades

By the time the magazine goes to print, we will have participated in the Adelaide City Council Australia Day Parade.  This traditional parade is always very musical and colourful with many varied associations and cultures participating.  Look for the write up in the next magazine.

Mount Barker Caledonian Society
Sunday 20 February 2011 – Assembly 8.00 – 8.30am
We have been invited to join the 50th Golden Jubilee Highland Gathering to be held at the Mt Barker Recreation Grounds as a static display.

This long running event is a unique Scottish Cultural event embracing all things Scottish and everything in between.  The 50th celebration will host the State’s Pipe Band Championships, Gathering Tug-of-war Championships, Strong Man Championships, Highland Dancing competitions, Broadsword display and much more.  As you can see, with all this activity added with some colour, music and MG’s, it will be a fun day.

We have the opportunity to dress up in your family tartan or a bit of blue and white (don’t go to the extent or repainting your car) and come along for the day.  Car drivers will receive free entry to the day and cars will need to remain until 4.00pm.

At the time of print, I have had very little interest in this display.  I am still yet to receive a response from the Organisers if they would like us to proceed with a small number of participants.

If you are interested in participating in any of these parades, please contact me to register your interest or for further information, where I can keep you updated of any last minute changes to arrangements.

Onkaparinga Council
Christmas Pageant
Saturday 27 November 2010
By Ray Barnes

The day started out a bit damp, in fact I had to put up my roof on the way down. We had cars, all looking bright and shiny and very Christmassy in all their decorations and tinsel, as they should be for a Christmas Pageant.
It was raining off and on for a while; one enterprising fellow even came down with his coffee van. But as the morning progressed the rain dissipated and at start time the sky was clear and we had a nice warm sun for the duration of the pageant, someone must know the big weather man in the sky. One of our members was asked to carry the Mayor, very privileged, there were not as many politicians as usual because one of the major parties was having their state conference, there was a bit of discussion about if anyone cared.
The parade went well with everyone having a fun time. The parade route was lined with several thousand people the full length of Beach Rd. It was good to see a lot of  ‘first timers’ although some were asleep in mum’s arms, there were also a lot of folks who had enjoyed a lot pageants in their time and still do, although I think they might have been passed sitting on Santa’s lap.
Everyone had a good time and the pageant went off without a hitch. We look forward to next year.

Attending the day were;

Ray Barnes                              MGA
Gwenda and John Buckby        MGTC
Brian Sparkes                           MGTC
Lain Turner and Bob King      MGRV8
Linda and Graham Byass         MGB
Trevor Praite                            MGB
Peter Auld                                MGTF
Mary and Peter Kragonis         MGB

21st Annual Westfield Tee Tree Plaza Xmas Parade

A total of 5 vehicles had already assembled for the parade when I arrived. After obtaining some decorations, balloons, we proceeded to decorate our cars ( I cheated I did mine before leaving home ) we waited for the parade to start at 10am. We then left the council depot for a short drive along Tolley Rd turning right into Smart Rd leading to the plaza past 1000’s of people who had assembled for the parade.
The response we received was terrific making this a pleasant and happy event to attend.
See you all there next year

Parades & Displays Report
October 2010

It’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to write an article for the magazine due to the miserable motoring weather and lack of incentive for South Australian Organisations to arrange events during the colder months.  So, it’s great to know that Spring is just around the corner and we’re starting to see some activity coming again.

Below are some Parades that I am aware of.  As usual, if you can let me know your interest as soon as possible so that I can confidently respond to the event organisers that the MG Car Club of South Australia is in a position to support their activities.

Onkaparinga Council Christmas Pageant
Saturday 27 November 2010

This is one of our regular favourite and fun parades.  The opportunity to carry Local Council, State and Federal Politicians is usually presented.  Having just had a Federal Election, you will get the chance to ask the tough questions while carrying a local Member in the parade.

Westfield Tea Tree Plaza Christmas Pageant
Saturday 6 November 2010

This is another regular Parade leading up to Christmas.  The 21st Annual Community Christmas Parade will assemble at the usual location of the Tea Tree Gulley Council Depot on Tolley Road at 9.00am for a 10.00am start.  The parade continues along Tolley Road and Smart Road, concluding at the Westfield Tea Tree Plaza roof top carpark where Father Christmas is due to arrive around 11.00am.

Campbelltown City Council Christmas Pageant
Sunday 12 December 2010

We have been introduced to this parade through one of our Member’s, Ann Calver at Brock Harcourts Magill.  At the time of writing this article, details of the parade haven’t been finalised and our participation hasn’t been confirmed.

Plans for the event at this time include a parade commencing around 4.30pm which will be followed by a family event and Carols in the Park.  The whole day is expected to conclude around 9.30pm.  If this proceeds, it should be a fun family day which is an ideal lead in to Christmas Spirit.

I will be away with my employment for most of October.  Ashley Packer has kindly offered to provide support during this period.  If you would like further information on any of the Parades or register to participate, please contact Ashley by phone on 8280 7440 or by email, ashley.packer@futureelectronics.com during my absence.

Vintage & Classic Day
McLaren Vale
Sunday 18 April 2010

We commenced the day assembling at the Clarendon Bakery.  Some club member’s took advantage of the delights of the meeting point and commenced the day with a pastry and coffee.

We headed off in convoy through the picturesque back roads of Kangarilla via Bakers Gulley Road on our route to the main assembly area at McLarens on the Lake.  At the assembly point, the MG’s lined up next to the Jaguars and with 25 MG’s, our queue exceeded that of our close rivals.

The main street of McLaren Vale was lined with people along its complete length.  I was amazed at the interest and support for this local event.  It has grown in size every year since its inception in both number of vehicles participating and support from the local community.  There was a total of 290 cars participating on the day.

From the main parade we branched off heading to our individual allocated wineries.  Ours was the Lazy Ballerina winery.  Trevor Sharp, MG owner and main organiser of the Vintage and Classic day went to exceeding lengths to show Australian culture to his French exchange student passenger, Jeanne Grandsert.  On the way to the winery, a kangaroo unfortunately struck the front of Trevor’s car.  Jeanne who was armed with her camera in the passengers seat of the open MG, ducked instead of taking the opportunity to catch some great snaps that would have been an extreme talking point upon her return to school.  What a missed opportunity!

Upon arrival at the winery, home made pizza’s and a barbeque were on offer to complement the fine wines for lunch.  The setting was absolutely magnificent with lovely well-kept gardens and secret little pockets to hide away for those so desiring.  It is a fantastic surrounding for any occasion from a car club meeting to a wedding.
