Vintage & Classic Day
McLaren Vale
Sunday 18 April 2010

We commenced the day assembling at the Clarendon Bakery.  Some club member’s took advantage of the delights of the meeting point and commenced the day with a pastry and coffee.

We headed off in convoy through the picturesque back roads of Kangarilla via Bakers Gulley Road on our route to the main assembly area at McLarens on the Lake.  At the assembly point, the MG’s lined up next to the Jaguars and with 25 MG’s, our queue exceeded that of our close rivals.

The main street of McLaren Vale was lined with people along its complete length.  I was amazed at the interest and support for this local event.  It has grown in size every year since its inception in both number of vehicles participating and support from the local community.  There was a total of 290 cars participating on the day.

From the main parade we branched off heading to our individual allocated wineries.  Ours was the Lazy Ballerina winery.  Trevor Sharp, MG owner and main organiser of the Vintage and Classic day went to exceeding lengths to show Australian culture to his French exchange student passenger, Jeanne Grandsert.  On the way to the winery, a kangaroo unfortunately struck the front of Trevor’s car.  Jeanne who was armed with her camera in the passengers seat of the open MG, ducked instead of taking the opportunity to catch some great snaps that would have been an extreme talking point upon her return to school.  What a missed opportunity!

Upon arrival at the winery, home made pizza’s and a barbeque were on offer to complement the fine wines for lunch.  The setting was absolutely magnificent with lovely well-kept gardens and secret little pockets to hide away for those so desiring.  It is a fantastic surrounding for any occasion from a car club meeting to a wedding.

AUSTRALIA DAY PARADE 26TH JANUARY 2010

By Fred Neild

For the first time organizers moved the start time of the parade through the streets of Adelaide from morning to early evening.  The last 4 years we had experienced very hot conditions, and the change was a welcome relief from the morning heat.

The twelve MG’s assembled in Franklin Street and we proceeded to dress our cars in Australian flags and bunting.  Our official assembly point at 5.00pm was in Pulteney Street, and after a bit of confusion by the marshals we lined up next to the Model T Ford Club and the Ferrari Owners Club. Without doubt our cars, dressed up, won hands down for patriotism against the other clubs.

This year, with the evening start at 6.00pm, the number of  community groups and other car clubs (total of 119) was way up on last year, and it took 30 minutes before we could start our engines. I estimate the parade ran for close to 50 minutes.

We ran two abreast in age (of cars) order and it was great to see the positive reaction our cars received from the spectators along the route.  Even the “official party” rostrum gave us an enthusiastic wave.

The parade finished at Elder Park and we had the option of parking for free in the Torrens Parade Ground opposite and enjoying the free family concert & fireworks in Elder Park. A few of us took up the opportunity and enjoyed performances by James Morrison and a fantastic Vanessa Amarossi.  Laura Smith, a regular parade participant, could not attend, but she would have been bopping if she was there.

I must mention Lynn Foody was unwell, and Laurie brought along his granddaughter Casey. We wish Lynn recovers soon and we see her cheerful face on future Club runs.

Our Parade Coordinator Jeff Jeanes & his wife were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary today, and Jeff had taken his wife for a romantic dinner in the hills. I must thank Jeff on behalf of all the participants for organizing passes and coordinating the day.

Vintage & Classic Day
McLaren Vale  Sunday 18 April

It’s still not too late to register for the Vintage & Classic Day which is on Sunday 18 April.  Registering prior to 1 April will cost the standard fee of $10.  Registrations after this date will cost a further $10, so be quick.

We have been allocated the Lazy Ballerina winery for lunch.  This winery has a great story as it started as a pet project of a Roseworthy student and his Father.

Lazy Ballerina is located across the road from scenic Kuitpo Forest which is a winding 12 minute journey from McLaren Vale. The cellar door features 5 acres of sweping gardens which are famous as part of the ABC's Open Garden Scheme. Food and of course wine are available on the day. Pizza's and Platter's are available for $12.50 in addition to a range of tea, coffee and cake.

Full details and a registration form can be downloaded from www.vintageandclassic.com.au
Don’t forget also to check out the Lazy Ballerina winery at www.lazyballerina.com

Please contact me if you require further information and advise me if you are intending to participate in this event, so we can coordinate the meeting location and I can confirm lunch numbers with the winery.

Onkaparinga Christmas Pageant 2009
Saturday 21 November 2009

The weather forecast for the day wasn’t very positive for open top parading and it is usually colder, windier and wetter at Noarlunga when the forecast isn’t too exciting.  As we headed south, it wasn’t raining although the thick black clouds looked very threatening.  We assembled and decorated our cars in fine Christmas spirit and our political guests began to arrive, most carrying umbrella’s.  Talk about lack of confidence!

First time parader, Marc Read was excited to carry the Onkaparinga Mayor, Lorraine Rosenberg as she is also the Patron of his yacht club.

As the time for the parade got closer, the clouds lifted and for brief moments, we even saw sunshine.  As usual, this was an extremely fun parade with the crowd up close, many of the children having drawn colourful chalk drawings over the road.  The usual “I want one of those” requests could be heard from the Mum’s and Dad’s as we drove past and the children waved, asked for the horn to be sounded and how far was Santa behind us.

We were further back in the parade than usual this year, which was probably a bit strange with a state election looming in 2010 but I guess Christmas pageants aren’t meant to be political.  I’m not sure if our location was the reason that we moved very slowly but we were certainly slower than usual and my car struggled with over heating even though we were heading down hill (It’s all fixed now for those technically concerned, thanks).

We finished the parade and began to remove the Christmas spirit from our cars and it immediately started to drizzle.  By the time we’d got to the main road it was bucketing down.  I drove home in my swimming pool dodging rain drops from pelting in my eyes and thought it was all worth it.  This is what open top motoring is all about, having fun, rain or shine !

Participating on the day were;

Marc Read                                       TF
Ray Barnes                                      A
Linda & Graham Byass                   B

Bay Sheffield Carnival
Sunday 28 December 2009

The weather was much kinder to us for the Bay Sheffield Carnival, being in the perfect high 20’s on a beautiful Adelaide summer’s evening.  Although not travelling as fast as the runners around the track, we certainly travelled with a lot less effort.

As per the past few years, we had 2 parades.  The first carrying Bay Sheffield Hall of Fame identities and the second about an hour later, the Male and Female winners of the respective 2009 Bay Sheffield’s.

If you ever want to feel up close raw emotion, this is the way to do it.  With the large crowd only metres away, cheering and clapping and the guest on the back of the car with emotional tears of joy, this is the way to do it…..and all for a ride in an MG.

Participating on the day were;

Gwenda & John Buckby              TC       Kingsley and Deb Hampton (son and daughter of Hall of Fame inductee, Ken Hampton).
Jeff Jeanes                                     B         Melos Sulicich, Hall of Fame inductee
Laine Turner & Bob King             RV8    Bob Steele, 1946 Bay Sheffield winner
Alison & Ashley Packer                B         Frank McHugh, 1974 Bay Sheffield winner
Gerry Rankine & Alan Batrame   B         Ruth Taylor, 1989 women’s Bay Sheffield winner
Jan Dinan & Mike Greenwood     C         Shane Theile, 1999 Select Mile winner

Upcoming Parades

Australia Day Community Parade
Tuesday 26 January,
starting at 6.00pm

The Australia Day Council have changed the arrangements for the Australia Day Community Parade again this year.  Travelling along the same route as last year in Pulteney Street, the parade will commence at 6.00pm with assembly from 5.00pm.  The later start should avoid the hotter part of the day which should be more comfortable for all involved.

As per last year, we will be limited to 12 vehicles.  These will be allocated on a first come basis, so please contact me early to confirm your participation to avoid disappointment.
