SOCIAL REPORT

Bev Waters - Social Secretary

FATHER XMAS WAS THERE
From..Bev Waters, Social Secretary

The 2009 Christmas Party saw a record attendance for an event at the Clubrooms, and whilst it was very crowded conditions that overflowed into the back yard, it also added to the atmosphere of the night.

Volunteer bar attendants Peter Both & Berry Treffers kept up with the crowd, and were rewarded with record takings, which they were ecstatic about. Cheers!

Father Christmas did a great job and bought a lot of humor to the night – Thanks to Leyland George and his close contact with FC. I think the hole in the back of his pants at an appropriate location, caused a lot of uncontrollable laughter too from the crowd.

He handed out a few novelty presents that were appreciated by the crowd.  Lawrie & Lyn Foody - a survival kit for future club runs (maps, phone card, & water), Leigh Richter & Co were given a bottle of MG Racing red (heard they would drink anything), Laurie Houghton a diary to help with calendar dates in the magazine, David & Di Holmes received a mounted trophy of cutlery for their role with the lunch runs, and Peter Both was awarded a mounted bar utensil as Bar Manager which he was particularly interested in the screw part. Arthur Ruediger & Wayne Hough were given paint brushes, paint stirrer & hat to go with their ‘Brilliant White’ racing suits (heard they were kept being asked for painting quotes at the recent Lobethal event.).

It was great to see some faces we have not seen at the club for some time, Ian Buckley, David McNabb, Joyce & Neil Williams, Brian & June Hills, just to name a few.  Nice to see Tony Hick there as well, sprightly as ever and always with a friendly smile. I also noticed he was overseeing the girls doing the food preparation, making sure all was going well.

Thank you to everyone for making it a very successful social event.

My thanks also to Geraldine Hough for her cooking and preparation of food, making the table clothes, decorating the clubrooms and much more; Carol King, her quiches were a hit, and she was a great help with food preparation on the night.   Shelley and grand daughter Jazz helped all night serving food along with numerous others, and many offers to help out with clearing tables and tidying up. As usual Mick & Philomena Mitolo, Laura Smith &  Karin Caffin were on duty at the kitchen sink.

The lucky door prize raffle was conducted at the January Monthly Meeting, and prizes are being distributed.

Thanks to everyone.

PS

I thank those who advised they were attending.  For future events when catering is involved, it is important to know approximate numbers not only to ensure adequate food, but for seating and planned food stations as well.  One or two do not make a lot of difference, but when thirty plus think the same, it does.   Chaos reigned for a short time, and I apologies for insufficient seating for all.

Re forthcoming social events,

I am still trying to find space on the Calendar once the other events are allocated, and with the MG National Meeting approaching here at Easter, there will not be very much on until after that time.

The President’s Day picnic normally held in early January, was thankfully deferred until more suitable weather – It was 43 degrees Sunday 10th when it was originally planned.

A reminder of the Marque Sports Car display on Sunday Feb 21st at Peter Lehmann Wines, Tanunda.

For those interested in meeting for morning tea, see you at the Lyndoch Bakery at 10.00am.

TOUR OF THE TREASURY TUNNELS

Report byBev Waters

Another interesting Historic tour with 39 people attending.  Very few of us knew the full history of the Medina Hotel, let alone the underground tunnels beneath it.  The original building was built in 1839, with additions and renovations taking place since.

Did you know that Parliamentarians worked voluntary until 1887?

Some had the opportunity to sit around the boardroom table in the Cabinet Room, where many prominent figures had sat before and made many life-changing decisions.

We didn’t find any left over gold in the tunnels unfortunately, but whilst some of them have been left in the old condition, some of the rooms have now been renovated for conferences and social functions etc.

Our guides Mary & Grant did a great job, and how they remember all the facts and dates, I will never know, but all very interesting.  Even Charles Sturt (along with many others), used the Medina as their home base when in town.

Although lifts were available, sprightly guide Mary (must have been 70) took the stairs most of the time, so no one dared take the easy way up or down in our group.

NATIONAL MEETING 2010    FUNDRAISER

DINING OUT

I am looking for expressions of interest to go out for dinner every couple months.
If this could be of interest to anyone, please let me know.
I am suggesting Saturday 22nd August for our first outing – venue still under investigation.

As the Club is promoting the Entertainment Book to assist with raising funds for our 2010 MG National Meeting, this could be an opportunity to use your book.  However you do not have to have an entertainment book to be part of this dining out adventure.  Everyone is welcome.  A venue where there is some entertainment or music could also be an alternative arrangement in the future, if there is any interest.
