Club Activities

Once again 2008 provided a full and varied calendar of events to suit all members of our club, in all a total of 487 individual members, or just over 50% of the total membership attended a club activity. Following is a brief outline of these activities;

Social – There was no one elected to the position of Social Secretary in 2008 so organised social activities, apart from all the other regular events were limited to:

The President’s Day, at Bev Water’s Gawler property, in January to welcome all new members who joined the club in the past year, this event is combined with the January meeting of the Pre War & T – register and attracted 140 or so members.

The annual mid year lunch run this year saw 79 members in 41 MGs, travel to the Weintal Resort in Tanunda for a very enjoyable day. Thanks to the Richter’s and Foody’s for organising this run.

The traditional Xmas breakup at the clubrooms in December, with Father Xmas Fred, handing out gifts to all who attended.

Register Meetings – the various registers within the club staged a variety of events;

Pre War & T - Register, 12 meetings, the majority of these being held in members garages as per the long standing tradition. ( 93 individual attendees )

       In October, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the Y – Type tourer with a lunch run to Woodstock Winery at McLaren Vale which attracted 4 YT tourers and 4 Y saloons. We were privileged to be joined on the day by the National Y  Type Registrar, Tony Slattery and his wife Debbie from Queensland.

A - Register  6 meetings, including  the popular economy run to Victor Harbor which attracted 23 members, the best recorded economy figure was 38 mpg.( 37 individual attendees )

C – Register one event for the year, with 4 participants.

F – Register staged 2 events for the year, a film and lunch run to Blyth with 73 participants and a lunch run to Olivers Taranga Vineyards with 36 attendees.

Combined B – Register and Know Your MG Meetings had a total of 7 meetings, consisting mainly of Technical Topics.

Breakfast Runs – these monthly Sunday morning runs are one of the best attended events on the calendar, with a total of 133 individual members attending the various venues over the past year.

Mid Week Lunch Runs – this monthly activity is an ideal opportunity for the retirees in particular, to meet for coffee and then travel to selected venues for a relaxing lunch, the popularity of these outings was emphasised by the attendance of 81 individual members over the year.

The Week Ender  - The weekender this year was held in September with 52 members meeting at Auchendarroch House, Mount Barker for morning tea and registration before travelling to Kapunda for lunch and then onto the Clare Valley Motel for the night. The theme for the evening was “ Australiana “ with many members dressing for the occasion. Sunday morning was taken up by a visit to Goode Restorations in Clare followed by morning tea at Martindale Hall, a short but scenic run to Sevenhill Hotel for lunch which by this time the numbers had grown to 68 rounded off a great weekender.

Parades & Displays – a total of 65 club members participated in the 9 official events in 2008, these included two Australia Day Parades, the SANFL Grand Final parade, three Xmas parades, the Bay Sheffield at Glenelg, Sunny brae and the McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic day.

Show and Shine -  On April 13 we held a Show & Shine Spectacular on Wigley Reserve Glenelg, the turn out of cars was a little disappointing, with only 107 cars taking part in the judging. A high light of the day was the appearance of the Chris Bucknell R Type and the Phil Brady K3, it was the first time in 56 years that these two MGs had been together.

Motorsport – The motorsport calendar for 2008 had 21 events which were eligible for competition points. The 9 best results, achieved by members competing, were used to calculate the “Club Competition Champion. “ This year the eligible events included the National  Meeting  hill climb and motorkhana and also the super sprint and hill climb at the MG Challenge. The other events which made up the 21 were, 5 motorkhanas, 6 hill climbs, 4 super sprints, 1 twilight super sprint and 1 regularity event .Award recipients for 2008 were: Club Competition Champion – John Kemp, Ladies  Competition Champion – Sue Day, Novice Award – Rob Hall, Encouragement Award –  Bob King.

The MG Challenge – Due to the unavailability of a suitable venue in Victoria, we were asked to host the 2008 MG Challenge, over the June long weekend,  for the second year in succession. In a reversal of usual practise the hill climb was held at Collingrove on the Saturday and the super sprint at Mallala on Sunday. It was encouraging to see a number of new competitors this year, with a total of 36 competitors from SA, 24 from Victoria, 4 from the Gold Coast and 1 from Newcastle. SA took out the honours with an average score of 8.36 compared to Victoria’s 7.63.

Annual Kimber Birthday Run – The 13th  annual Kimber Birthday Run was held in November and a total of 153 MGs and approximately 300 persons, some who travelled from  as far away as Mount Gambier and Mildura took  part in this popular event.  We were fortunate this year to have two MG K3s in the field, in addition to the regular appearance of Phil Brady, in K3030, the Adam Berryman K3002, which had been brought over from Victoria for the Lobethal Grand Carnival, was driven on the day by Tony Parkinson – Director of the Lobethal  Grand Carnival.

After a lovely run to Nairne for morning tea, where the cars were lined up in a magnificent display on the oval, it was off to the historic river side town of Mannum for lunch at the Pretoria Hotel, where the MGs provided another great display parked on the grass along side the River Murray.

Another successful Kimber run, thanks to Mike Greenwood and all his able helpers.

National Meeting Only 6 members from South Australia attended the Nat Meet hosted by the Sydney MG Car Club, in Tamworth, over the Easter weekend. Although few in numbers, we were able to secure one first place, five second places and a third place from the various events. We congratulate the placegetters and the 6 members who attended, for representing our club. A reminder that in 2010 it is our turn to host The Nat Meet.

Historic Registration – The historic registration committee again provided their voluntary services on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, we now have 590 vehicles on the historic registration system.

Regalia – Sales continued to be an important aspect of club requirements, with several new lines of shirts, jackets and caps being introduced to compliment the range of regalia available to members.

Dads Army – They were active during the year attending to all the requirements that need attention to ensure that all members can safely enjoy the facilities provided.

MG Motoring –  The eleven issues of the club magazine , that members received during the year, again proved to be an invaluable source of information, with details of forthcoming events as detailed in the new calendar format , together with all the various reports on the years events interspersed with items of interest and technical tips.

Club Awards for 2008 – Congratulations to the award winners for 2008

Presidents Award, for outstanding contribution to the club – Jim Underwood

The Irving Cup – Joint winners, Lawrie Foody & Arthur Ruediger

Other Events – there were several other events not necessarily “official MG CC of SA events “that were attended by some of our club members. Notable among these were, All British Day, the Vintage Hillclimb at Collingrove and the Lobethal Grand Carnival, staged to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the last race held on this circuit 60 years ago.

In conclusion I remind you that clubs like the MG Car club, rely almost solely on unpaid volunteers, who give their time for the benefit of all members. Without volunteers we could not operate or provide the level of service and compliance with the statutory requirements that are necessary for the execution of the day to day duties involved in successfully running our club. We should be thankful that in the past 12 months we have been fortunate in having a team of volunteers to do just this. On behalf of all club members I sincerely thank all of these people, regardless of the level of their contribution during the year.

Arthur Ruediger

Secretary
