The
MG Car Club of South Australia has its clubrooms at 93 Chief Street Brompton.
The Club was established in 1956 and has approximately 800 members.
It is not a pre-requisite to own an MG, but you will find that most of
our members own an MG of some description whether it be a currently registered
vehicle, an historic registered vehicle, a restoration project or a prize
winning concours car that only comes out occasionally. Some own two or
three (or more) cars, others are looking to purchase. Some prefer pre-war
vehicles, others like the MGB and some prefer the modern day Rover MG.
The Club has a variety of cars and members from all walks of life. The
Club keeps a register of all vehicles owned by its members.

COMMITTEE

What
can the Club offer you
Historic
Registration
Ian Denny and his team run the historic registration. The Registrar
of Motor Vehicles recognises cars that are 30 years old or more. The vehicle must
have been registered in South Australia prior to applying for historic
registration. Vehicles from interstate must be inspected and approved
by Transport SA. All vehicles must be in accordance with
the "Code of Practice" specified by the Registration and Licensing
Section of Transport SA.
To
gain historic registration the member must be and remain a financial member
of the club throughout the life of the vehicle registration. An historic
registration officer will conduct an inspection of the vehicle and make
sure that it complies with all of the "Code of Practice" requirements
set out by Transport SA. Logbooks are issued and registration papers are
endorsed. Logbooks must be endorsed by an historic registration officer
every year between 1 January and 28 February. Registration renewal papers
must be endorsed by an historic registration officer as soon as possible
after renewal.
Cars
can be inspected at the Clubrooms the second and fourth Saturdays of the
month between 10am and midday.
Historic
registration enables you to register your vehicle at approx $105.00 per
year with the condition that you are only allowed to drive your car 90
days per calendar year. You must complete your log book each time you
go out in your vehicle. Failure to do so should you be pulled over by
the Police will ensure a hefty fine.

Model
Registers
Ian Curwin-Walker runs the pre-war and “T-type” register. Particular
attention is made of pre-1955 vehicles. Members meet the first Thursday
of each month (note you don’t have to own a pre-1955 vehicle to
attend). These are a friendly “get together” in someone’s
shed or garage, a light supper provided and a good time to share information
and experiences. A gold coin donation is payable upon arrival.
Although formal separate gatherings for later model MGs are not held,
a Register book is now also being compiled for MGA, MGB, MGC, MGF &
MGTF, FWD, Midget and Magnette vehicles. Owners of these vehicles are
invited to forward details to the Coordinators of Records for inclusion
in the appropriate file. Below are the contacts for each register.
Plus send details about your car with a photo to the Webmaster; Mike Greenwood at: mikeg@adam.com.au

Motor Sport
Events
TIM EDMONDS is now in charge of Club motor sport, which falls into
three main categories, Hillclimbs, Super Sprints and Motorkhanas.
Hillclimb
Held at Collingrove in the beautiful Barossa Valley, near Angaston, these
are solo events run against the clock on a closed section of road or special
Hillclimb track. Collingrove is the one most commonly used by our Club.
Each Competitor usually has a chance to practice before the official competition
begins.
Super Sprint
Held at Mallala, several cars are on the track at one time. (a maximum
of 8 cars being used). Cars are lined up in pairs on the grid and flagged
off at intervals. A practice period is provided before the event to establish
times for grid positions - the faster cars being up front. First timers
will automatically be positioned at the rear of the field & and when
confident, it is your choice if you wish move up amongst the field on
the grid. It is an ideal introduction to circuit racing and can be entered
with road going cars as well as modified vehicles. As with all Motor sport,
safety checks on vehicles are done before each event - This is called
Scrutineering.
Motorkhana
Designed to test the skill and judgment of the driver and the general
maneuverability of the car. The event comprises of a number of maneuvering
tests set out on an open area eg, a car park. On arrival competitors are
given a copy of the nominated tests, and the competitors compete one at
a time and are required to negotiate the test by the correct method in
the fastest possible time.
The
C.A.M.S. (Confederation of Australian Motor sport) definition of a Motorkhana
is "A meeting including only events designed to test the acceleration,
braking and general maneuverability of the automobiles and the skill and
judgment of the crew members."
Motorkhanas
are a lot of fun and must rate as the most inexpensive, low risk way of
enjoying your MG in Competition and another great opportunity to improve
your driving skills.
This
type of event is where many of the champions of motor sport began.

Social
The Club offers many different social events both at the Clubrooms and
outside of the Clubrooms. The Clubrooms are licensed (but you cannot bring
your own alcohol). At the Clubrooms we hold a Noggin ‘n natter night
each Friday evening from 8pm thru to 11pm. A Noggin ‘n natter is
a friendly night for chats and a drink, either alcoholic or non-alcoholic.
Occasionally these nights get converted into a “video night”,
or a “cheese & crackers” night, or even a fancy dress
night. We also have guest speakers come along and speak.

Breakfast / Lunch Runs
Once
a month on a Sunday morning, those who are insomniacs meet at the University
Bridge at 8.15am and go for a run and have breakfast somewhere. These
are our monthly breakfast run. It is a BYO everything breaky and believe me, some
of the things being cooked are very elaborate and are not to be missed. For further details contact Peter Coulson on 8249 9760 or Mobile 0419 215 964
On the second Thursday of the month a lunch run is arranged for those lucky enough not to be working. These are to a hotel destination at the end of an enjoyable drive through the Adelaide Hills. They provide an opportunity to socialise with other members of the club. The meeting points are varied details can be obtained from Diane Holmes 8336 4557.

Monthly
General Meetings
Held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 8pm at the clubrooms. All members
and friends are welcome. The official part of the meeting includes reports
from all areas of the club, introduction of new members and a general
business segment where members can have their say and advise of items
to sell or wanted to buy etc. The meeting normally concludes between 9
and 9.30pm.
At
meetings we try and get a volunteer to be an Official Greeter to greet
new members and introduce them around to other members, as well as show
them around the clubrooms.

Technical Nights (Know your MG)
Held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at various locations including the
Clubrooms, members’ homes, or business premises, where general knowledge,
maintenance and restoration advice etc can be learnt. These informal meetings
are of particular interest to newer members wanting to know more about
their cars, but old and new members continue to attend depending on the
subject and the venue.
A
different topic is calendared for each meeting eg. How to maintain wire
wheels, servicing your vehicle, fibre glassing, how to tune your car,
or preparing your car for a particular event - just to name a few, and
regular visits to a manufacturer or supplier of parts is also of great
interest. Many more
interesting places are scheduled for 2007.

Parades
& Displays
The Club is often called upon to supply a group of cars for either a display
or a parade. At the latter, sometimes you will be required to transport
a passenger.
Some
members are pleased to volunteer for such outings and usually make it
a fun picnic day when a display is put on.
If
you are willing to participate in this type of event, please contact the
‘Parades & Display’ organiser in the Club and give your
details and MG model owned.
Some of the more prominent parades in which we have participated in are
Australia Day Parade, the SANFL Grand Final and some of the Adelaide United
Soccer games.

Dad's
Army
This
is a new initiative by the Club. Perfect for retirees who can spare one
day per month to help maintain the Clubrooms and property. It is guaranteed
(yeah sure) that on the day there will be no hard work but great camaraderie
and fun. So what will you be doing then - assisting
with minor repairs in the clubrooms, a bit of gardening and lots of general
"chit chat" about cars and things!
If
you think you would like to join the Dad's Army team contact Doug Marshaldoug.marshall@bigpond.com or Fred Neild fredneild@hotmail.com

Club
Library
We have a collection of MG books and videos which can be borrowed by members
free of charge. Books are signed out and are on loan for a 4 week period
only. To borrow a book, see a Committee member at the clubrooms.
Other
MG clubs and car magazines can also be viewed while visiting the clubrooms.
Have
you seen a book that you think the Club should have, then let a committee
member know and the Club will consider whether it would be suitable for
our library.
